I am doing a little cleaning up, including re-fitting plastics under engine. I had to take the heat shield off the y-pipe than goes vertically then angles horizontally to the rear. It was rattling badly on accel ..... My plastic is now 1/2 to 3/4" from the pipe w/o heat shields... is this too close that it may cause heat/fire problems??

You can run without the under-engine plastic with no problems at all.
I'd just leave it off. That is to say, my Spyder doesn't have one.

If you need something to worry about, ask yourself how you're going to get gravel out of the space between the exhaust piping and the remaining heat shield.

The front one is a bother when i'm changing the oil.
The rearmost, would make my IC dysfunctional.
As you noticed they are good for gathering road debris.

I have no heat shields and I have all the plastic and no issues.I had to cut a little notch in one side to fit with the Team moons.I don't like seeing the main cat so I keep the diaper on.

What plastic shields?

I guess you mean the ones I have somewhere in the back of the garage covered in mouse droppings. They came off at the first oil change, never to return. They are just a pain in the a**
