update: 9/11/2005 A year after the 2 cat, My 3 engine steadily got worse in oil consumption. It turns out. pistons 2 & 3 had alot of "piston slap"
I gave in & purchsed a MWR stage 1 short block with 11:1 compression.
Also, I had the exsisting cylinder head rebuilt. so far so good.

I've since gone back to regular dino juice. The rep from Castrol came by the dealership and found out about my rebuild. He suggested dino juice for the first 10,000 miles, then switching to synthetic as it takes longer for the engine to set with full synthetic right off the bat. Porsche engines are produced with much closer tolerances than our mass-produced engines.

I only have 6500 miles on the new engine and have ordered a ppe header to get rid of the cats. Upon inspection of my precats one is showing damage already!!!! I haven't had a bit of oil consumption yet. Hopefully I will have saved her with my new header.

I ran across, this way back when, dont know who to attribute it to.
Its a list of factory changes, if anyone could verify or debunk ...

06/01 New S-belt Tensioner
11/01 New Piston Rings & harmonic balancer
12/01 New pistons
02/02 New Longblock
04/02 New oil pickup
06/02 New Oil pump
07/02 New Water pump
10/02 New Cams.

My 3rd and current engine (1ZZW75) was swapped in during the 4thQTR of 2002 and the svc rep made some sort of deal about "throwing in a new water pump even tho I didnt really need one." So maybe I've got all but the Cams.

Engine and Cat replacement

Year: 2001
Miles: 26000
Driving style: aggresive, autocross, 80 hwy.
Cats replaced: 1
Engine replaced: 2
Type of fuel: 93 Octane
Type of Oil used: Sunoco (Toyota dealership)
Frequency of oil change: 3-4K.

At 12,000 miles the check engine light came on, but car didn't feel any different. They replaced the entire fuel injection system. At 26K a knock developed and performance decreased. They replaced the engine (lower end, small block were the words tech used). Cat was also replaced. I will dispose of car or buy extended warranty before it reaches 36K. Too bad, it is a blast to drive.

This is an update to my earlier post. Since the new engine install at 26K, the engine has failed again and this time a new dealership (I moved) gave me a lot of grief about it before reluctantly agreeing to cover it under warranty. The car has 30k on it now. That's right, only 4000 miles on the new engine.

Today is a sad day, for tomorrow I bring the car in to be traded on a 2002 Civic Si. That's right, I've gone over to the dark side, all due to two bad engines.

(added followup comment -by Mod - Gburrows- as part of keeping this thread clean)

To answer the above question, my car is stock from top to bottom. No aftermarket parts at all.

Think I might ditch the car also.

Engine & Cat Replacement

Year: 2000
Miles: 65,000
Driving Style: Progressive
Cats replaced?: 1
Engine replaced?: 1
Type fuel used: Unleaded
Type oil used: Synthetic
Frequency of oil change: was at 5k but now down to 500 miles

I do a very high mileage every day and I was burning a lot of oil, Toyota said not to worry about it. Made a fuss at 50k service, but again they said no problems, at 58k the Engine waring light came on and the performance was terrible due to back pressure. Toyota said the Cat had disintegrated and replaced that and some of the rest of the exhaust. Had 60k service and oil burning getting worse, 3/4 litres every 1k. Eventually heard a knocking sound and forced Toyota to take it in. The Camshaft is badly damaged due to lack of oil and the bottom Engine block needs replacing as oil is blowing past pistons. It is still in the garage and Toyota UK have yet to respond as to whether they will repair under warranty.

Toyota have agreed to pay for my engine replacement even though my mileage is 65,000 and outside the warranty. Clearly they are admitting there is a problem now!

Year: '00 (rumored to be first delivered in Oregon)
Miles: 33,713
Driving Style: Mixed
Cats replaced: None (at least it hasn't been mentioned yet)
Engines replaced: 1 (almost, not out of the shop yet)
Fuel: mostly 91 octane, lately 89
(engine has always "knocked" with reg or "plus" (Shell or Chevron)price drove me across town to Arco "plus"; no knock; may try regular again)
Oil: Castrol 5w30
Freq. of oil change: 3k-5k, usually add 1 to 3 qts between changes.

In town driving revs usually between 2.5k & 4.5k. 1.5 mile commute ~15 minutes clear across town, so engine barely gets warmed up in town. Out of town; ~1/3 freeway @ 75-80 mph (I am getting better about ignoring "that idiot" who keeps passing and slowing down...) ~2/3 two lane country roads @ 60-100 mph (it has been known to take me 3 hours to get home after work...) with frequent hard accel. (15-20mph(signed) turns with 1/4 mile straights between...) and 40-60 mph twisties through the hills...

Yea, miles are pretty low for 3 years, pleasure driving mostly summer, and last summer... didn't drive, long story, out of town. So I'm about 10k behind... now the weather is warm and dry and I'm getting further behind....then there's break in... AAAARRRRRRRGGGGGG

Fuel: 87 octane

Freq: ???

Found out today this car was repurchased by Toyota (don't yet know when) under the Lemon Laws of Texas. I can only assume this is the 2nd, 3rd, etc. engine and cats, etc. if someone went through the Lemon Law process successfully.
