What is the purpose of having Code, PHP, or HTLM in the BB code list? What can a user do with it?

Code:
 <script type="text/javascript">
 <!--
     alert("Hello world!");
 //-->
 </script>
PHP:
 $myvar = 'Hello World!';
 for ($i = 0; \$i < 10; \$i++)
 {
     echo $myvar . "\n";
 }
HTML:
<img src="image.gif" alt="image" />
<a href="testing.html" target="_blank">Testing</a>

Typically there is increased utility on tech forums relating to web authoring and / or programming. With having the original code outlined in the correct formatting as opposed to simply cut and paste troubleshooting problematic lines becomes a much simpler process. The code functions are also used as teaching tools for tutorials in web editing. Another function entails the embedding of elements within the forum.

For lack of a better reason it could just be because someone figured out it could be done and decided why not to put it in there.
