Back in the early 2000s direct injection was still pretty uncommon- mostly only found in Porsche and Mitsubishi engines, followed by a few other euro makes and Hyundai. I believe the 2GR-FSE in 2005 was Toyota’s first engine with DI(it also used port injection). Toyota has always been pretty conservative with tech.

Adding terminology for clarification. But also expanding the discussion...

The MR2 is sequential multiport fuel injected, meaning the injectors spray separately for each cylinder. Some older MPI did not have this feature.

It did have what was called 'toyota direct ignition', coil on plug, which might have caused confusion and prompted your original post... Hope you didnt lose a bet on the direct injection question.
