Per the title.

So, 20 year old, baked heat matting under the engine lid is seriously gross. Like falling apart, disintegrating in places gross. And rodents sometimes love it (haven't run into that yet, knock on wood).

It's gotta go.

Most common fixes I've seen;

1. new OEM (these are starting to get sparse)

2. adhesive thermal matting

I'm considering #2, with maybe making some provisions to enable removal and reuse in places that cover any wiring (e.g. lid brake light loom). However, I'm game to see what else there is.

I did search, I promise - just wanna hear from other Chatters - plus, we lost a lot of threads and info a bit back, I guess.

Did you replace your ratty old mats? What was your solution?

You're actually supposed to use a roller ( I don't have one).

But that stuff is flame retardant and high temperature. Would recommend!

FWIW my new engine cover gets toasty without that stuff. Could be that almost every bit of heat shield is gone too.

Definitely cut the noise. But I bought the cheap stuff from Amazon. 9 months later, it is starting to come unglued and some of the aluminum foil is shredding.

I will probably redo it in a year or so with a name brand material.

And as someone mentions, make sure to leave the sides of the engine drip pan open for proper air flow

Took it of many years ago like a dummy and since I also took the heat shield off as well.
My paint got destroyed by the heat. Put the metal heat shield back and new OEM fiberglass looking mat back on.

Had to repaint the engine lid🫠

I also don't have any heat shield nor foam under the lid of my 2zz, just the rain guard.

Anybody got the part number for the stock mats? I’m curious what they cost. I like the idea of putting aftermarket heat shielding on, but don’t like the added silver bling. Anyone know of a good solution in black?

I got a set from Japan Parts, which was much cheaper than anything I could find from US dealers. The JPY:USD exchange rate is even better right now than when I ordered. Shipping kind of kills the deal, but if you want/need other parts it makes more sense. One of the panels had a small tear in it from shipping but overall I was happy.

I wouldn't neccesarily call it a "heat" problem. It's simply the by product of the engine layout. Those stock mats does an ok job but It does get toasty tho.

Wrapping can lead to other problems. I’ve seen several of the more knowledgeable members on here discuss how it can cause the manifold to crack over time, and that it is better to insulate the important things nearby than to wrap the manifold. But I have no real technical information of my own to go off of.

does it matter if mine are missing? I have been without them for about a year and have had no issues but would replace them if they are really needed?

It’s possible that the heat will cook your paint or the wires that run up there over time. But I don’t think anyone really knows for sure. Sunlight is probably the biggest culprit for frying the paint.

I removed the lid heat for 3 years now and paint is not cracked. Just take time to wash the car more often. Personally, I wash my car one time/week minimum because black paint. If you live in warm and sunny country, paint will possibly crack. In Dubai, most of days are hots and sunny. Only 3~4 months have the colder temperatures.

You can still get the factory pieces they are expensive to me.
