$10K for a turbo 1ZZ making 400 wheel? What a fantasy. You get that it's an economy engine designed for the Corolla, right?

I bet no matter how many thousands of dollars of forged goodies (if available) you threw at it, the open deck cylinder block couldn't handle 400 wheel.
I have a dyno'd 385hp 1zz turbo but I will be getting rid of the custom turbo and setting a goal of 275 for the engine.

Anyway, the message is; DO call in case of emergency on roads like the one mentined even if you have zero signal.
The smarter message is: DO call, DON'T expect or rely on having service. Always have offline Google maps or equivalent downloaded & keep your cell phone charged.

I personally keep it simpler still and have a paper map in the car. Paper money and some coins too.
My phone has a 8380mAh battery.

But now wer are drifting (pun intended) fár off that beautiful LA Highway, reagardles of how much ponies the 1ZZ has in the stable. Mine has too many for most mountain roads anyway, enough for the rest. More lightness though would be nice

Too simple isn't helpful at all. A paper map doesn't do much without a compass, unless you've got a topography map with easily identifiable landmarks (water, mountains, etc) & not a typical driving map. If you don't need the compass, you probably know where you are that you don't need a map either.

A cell phone is a phone, map, compass, gps, search & rescue light & flashlight all wrapped into one. None of those is perfect alone but using all available info you can get your location down to 10ft or so, fairly accurate directional headings, & go from there. Considering the cost of satellite phones/dedicated GPS units I can't think of a simpler tool to have set up ready to go. Its also always on your person to boot. FWIW I'm not talking about how to get from point A to point B, I'm talking about getting caught out in a truly desolate place. Even with pretty decent planning, s*** happens.

it is not the SIM which sends the signal but the antenna. Com satellites will also pick that up, In case no tower responds it will be relayed. No, there will be no phóne call/connection but the alert is passed on.
Worked several years in first line response here in the mountains. Was also the mounted unit for tricky to reach sites.

Well the link I posted did indicate you could even use an old phone not on any network and without a SIM, so somethings apparently happening whatever it may be. It’s definitely worth trying if ever in that situation.

I know my north and yes always know where I am. No issues there. Nor with ´knowing´ whereabouts my destination is. However, as in the mountains here the roads twist and turn, on crossings as often signposted as not, it is handy to be able to check the map in case of doubt.
Imo the GPS electronics only serve the general loss of orientation skills.
But yes, I could travel without map or mobile phone. It is mostly for assurance. In case of doubt simply following the road will get you to a farm or village and we have developed language for a reason :p
Traveling this way also gets you to the least trodden parts of the country ánd you meet the nicest people. The only trick involved is seeing the voyage itself as the goal.

Back on the subject; just flog whichever engine you have up/down your anywhich favourite road. Even the stock 1ZZ has enough poke to keep you concentrated through the twisty bits.

Wherever I go, I always take with me a courier pigeon, trained to home itself back to the nearest police station, carrying the message "Send help please."
I always carry three things for survival; a blanket for smoke signals, a set of flags for semaphore, and a telegraph. I haven’t needed them yet, but you never know when cell service will be unavailable whether due to remoteness or an electromagnetic pulse.

Prefer a different bird. The one you can snuggle up with overnight
Give her the map and:
1. you see unexpected places
2. taking the blame for getting ´lost´ gets you wonderful bonus points

I want to forget the 2ZZ. I bought an MR2 with 128k on it and I was scared of the 1ZZ blowing up, as I bought it as a track car. I had a guy swap in a 2ZZ with a 6 speed and LSD. The 2ZZ blew up within 75 miles of driving on the street and now I have a brick of a car. I don't know what to do now.
Where is the car now? I’d like to have a spyder again
