Who is buying this car for fuel economy? Granted, it's probably more fuel efficient than most other 2 seat convertibles on the road.

Who is buying this car for fuel economy? Well, I did. I have a 70 mile commute each way and was driving a Volvo C70 with a twin turbo 6, was getting 27 mpg in that beast. Knew I needed to burn less gas but just couldn't see my see myself in a Yaris ;)

So, basically, 90% of the time me 2 is an econo-box. 90% stock, 1zz, 5spd, headers, no-cat (gotta love TN!) During the week, I regularly get 35mpg. (ok, so on weekends, it gets about 15 ;) )

My dream (as a 6spd just isn't in my budget) is to obtain a Corolla 5spd, and have my tranny operated on to replace an ill 3rd gear syncro.... While they're in there, replace my 5th gear with the 5th from the Corolla tranny. I know there will be a performance penalty, but truth be told, I'm never romping on it 5th. So by maintaining 1 - 4 mr2 gears I haven't changed anything in the area where I'm get on it, but hopefully a significantly better Cruise mode.

Corolla of the era got 40+ with a 1zz, so why not a 2?

We have a Euro 6 speed in our Spyder and there is a nice drop in RPM on the highway, but we really didn't see any real change in fuel economy.

I would rather have a Prius than drive a spyder with the windows up and top up to get higher mileage :) I am guessing a hardtop would increase mileage also.

Grins per mile is much more important for me :)
I agree...when the weather is warm and dry.

I dispute the claim that better mileage comes from driving with the top up or windows up.

I have hard data to prove it, so enjoy your convertible.

Driving with the top down is fun until you fall victim to aerial bombardment.

WTH? Where do you get this kind of attack? Bird sanctuary? Spring brings out the birds but I've never seen this.
No idea lol. I didn't take that picture.

I do enjoy some good top-down motoring, and I wonder if it really affects gas mileage. Best Motoring did time trials with several convertibles on Tsukuba and all but one of the cars were actually faster by ~.5 seconds with the top DOWN. It's not the fastest track around, but at least at those speeds it doesn't seem to be slowing anybody down.

Hard data for those interested. 5500+ mile coast to coast road trip, mostly with the top down - HIGHLIGHTED LINES are with the top UP due to rain or BUGS!

Yes, you read that chart right. $491.72 got me from East to West, up and down the coast, and back to Georgia.... So much better than an airline ticket, and didn't have to rent a car.

I did get an oil change while I was there, brought my own oil and filter from stock I had in the garage, so add $20 labor to this and it nudges me over the $500 mark. Of course, I ate a lot of Tommy's chili burgers and fries while I was there. I had so much fun I did it again just a couple months later. Did a trip to Colorado in between. Next year, I'll be doing a Northern California run, taking the northern route up through Colorado and will end up near the Oregon border and work my way down the coast to the human toilet we used to call "San Francisco"... still got stubborn relatives all around the bay who haven't realized it's time to leave... yet.

This car gives me no trouble, and for my next trip I'll have my luggage rack installed, thanks to Cyclehead's tireless efforts to get these adapters made for us.

That's interesting. You did have your lowest mileage with the top down, but the top up days were nowhere near the best. Too many factors like weather, elevation change, etc I think to know for sure.

Maybe I should run only my work commute with the top up next week, then top down the week after and compare those.

The first tank represents the mileage present when I filled the tank before setting out, so that's to/from work, which is usually done with the top in the up position due to me being on the phone constantly. It was raining when I left, and it quit around Monteagle TN but clouds looked kind of dicey so I left it up for a while.

There are variations in fuel quality for sure. If we go back through my entire fuel history, I've got strong reasons to believe nobody should ever buy fuel at a Pilot truck stop unless there are no other options available.

Well I guess I'll roll on and take my chances unless I see something like this headed my way, lol. Top up, top down- doesn't really matter in my mind because I'm enjoying the car regardless of the mpg.

Really detailed records you've kept. Definitely got me beat on tracking fuel purchases to still have this a year later. Solid record keeping (y)

Haha...yeah, that's just a tiny sliver of the massive spreadsheet I have on this car. It's a bit of an obsession.

I know the following from my experience at an Automotive OEM as an engine engineer: vehicle fuel economy measurements have a pretty high standard deviation. Even on chassis rolls, repeatability between runs is worse than 3%, and repeatability in the real world is many time worse. In order to draw valid conclusions on the road, you would have to run 10 tests under similar conditions and then calculate your standard deviation, and demonstrate a benefit or deficit of more that 1 SD.

The other issue I can see is that people assume gas pumps are accurate and that the pump clicks off at the same level of fuel every time. I don't think that is always the case.

I've run hundreds of tests. Every single tank of fuel since I bought the car on 8/5/2015

28.37 mpg is my average.

Gas pumps are very accurate and it doesn't matter when it clicks off because the small amount of fuel in the filler tube isn't going to affect the math by much.
