I picked up a factory 02 salvage title Spyder in 2018 with 29k mi on it, gutted the precats, and have been daily driving it since.

Recently I threw some safety equipment in it and drove 30+ hours round trip to compete in an SCCA hillclimb. I competed in CSP (no ES class exists for hillclimb) and was 2 seconds from a podium with 340tw tires, open diff, and second time ever really being on a closed course or track. Hillclimb has appealed to me for years along with touge...and now I am going to actually try to engage myself.

I would like to shoot for DP while being smart about money along the way. In other words, minimize the modifications to the 1ZZ because it will eventually come out for DP.

I have been following Gouky's YT channel and the 1AR or a 2AR + 1AR crank appeals the most to me due to it's powerband.

The only hillclimb spyder I know of is that 2GR TT one from South Africa, I think, but maybe there are others on here that have a good aero/suspension setup for HC.

The "+" in the title refers to that I don't want to only compete in hillclimbs. I want the car streetable and I also participate in rallycross and will also be looking at time trials, track days, and maybe rallysprint.

My idea as follows:

Koni Yellows + ? springs
Whiteline F+R sway bars. Will probably leave the rear off especially due to open diff.
15x8 or 15x9 wheels Konig Dial-In or Avanti Storm...still need to do more research.
Tires are up in the air right now. No hoosiers. Probably ZIIIs due to available sizes and flexibility.
Aero will be homemade unless I can find something fitting.
FRP hard top from Octane (because material same as OEM)
Necessary weight reduction.
Only 1ZZ modifications I am thinking are a lightweight exhaust which can be chopped and salvaged for the 1/2AR.

And then when I make the jump to 1/2AR, it will get a drivetrain and engine makeover in the process. At that point I would probably sell my Hard Dog roll bar and get it caged.

Oh and of course this would be removed from daily driver status hopefully this year.

I would post some pictures but don't have any on this device.
Any pointers from fellow hillclimbers or alike? Anything I am missing?

Thank you for your interest.

Here is a picture of me at Chasing the Dragon by Autoxpix. Great shot!

I now have Annex CSP coilovers and a hardtop on their ways to me. Stocking up on tires for 2022 season. Debating when I want to jump classes from Street Prepared to Street Unlimited (a hillclimb exclusive class).

The rubber I have acquired this past week. My wallet hurts. I have 4 more Hoosiers on the way, but those are for rallycross.

I have a also been dialing it in while rallycrossing but now have a deposit down on another MR-S, one with full stage rally preparation. I will be bringing it home before the end of the year and it will be the rallycross / rally / Colorado hillclimb car. CHA hillclimbs are unpaved!

Rallycross picture for fun. PC: tingotango on Flikr.

Stay tuned for big changes.

2AR motor swap Q1 2022 most likely.

Cheers

Prepared for HooptieX Oklahoma this weekend. Competing in the "Hater" class. These are 1994 Saturn wheels and the tires are Hoosier closeout tarmac rally tires in DH compound. European rallycrossers use this style tire as well. The surface here is hard pack clay so these should be perfect.

Made the mudflaps on a whim out of some old Sterilite plastic drawer stuff that wasn't being used haha.

Depending on how legit your gravel offroad courses get you will likely find the need to replace the factory fender liners with a more durable material in addition to the McGuyver mud flaps. Cool stuff, looks fun

So this car will actually be retired soon for hillclimb duty only. I am buying Right2's MR2 and that car is a fully prepped NASA Rallysport stage car. It will assume the rallycross role along with CHA hillclimbs and stage rallies. However, there is no gravel really on our home course, it's all hard packed clay and wear is minimal.

Love those wheels. Mudflaps too. Hadn't seen this thread before, but following it now.

Good luck, and keep us posted.
Thank you, I kept searching OEM wheels in 15", 4x100 looking for a large diameter center because rally wheel reasons and ended up finding these on my last attempt. So weird they are from a random 1994 Saturn lol.

I have also acquired an EB60 and will be bringing home a sub 10k mile 2AR next week.

HooptieX was great but the weekend wore me out. Our local organizer had his AW11 up there Saturday and ended up losing an engine to the dirt. The rear engine + low pressure area behind the car keeps the dirt in the worst places. At 3am I did a quick check of my intake before leaving and discovered it was covered inside with a layer of fine dirt. The filter I bought in July had about a pound of dirt in it and was leaking dirt to the intake. I waited for the parts store to open while cleaning intake parts in the kitchen sink. The car was quickly thrown together with new clean filter and then I drove it out to arrive a bit late.

After consistent 1:52s in the morning and a scary moment where I thought I might have crushed my oil pickup I got back to business after lunch and managed a 1:43.91 which was good for 1st in "Hater" class and 2nd overall by........ .041 seconds....... Note I am open diff on stock suspension and this is my daily driver (hopefully not for long). I also still had a bunch of time to make up. Even on my fastest run I felt a bit sloppy.

I would have kept at it but when the officials said I was in first I thought they were saying overall but they were talking about my class
😐
🤦‍♂️

The only casualty was my exhaust breaking at the flex pipes which has already been fixed and almost loosing my front bumper and passenger headlight after taking two cones to the face at 50mph on my winning run. Cones didn't count for this event. I didn't intentionally hit them but they got in my way...heh. Very rewarding day and very fun and fast (70mph+ for me in the back straight) course although a bit rough for a stock suspension car without skidplates lol.

I am currently waiting for the RTV to dry after knocking some oil pan dings back out.

I tore apart the intake again last night to double check the filtration....bad news. The dust problem is absolutely terrible and again, this was with a brand new filter. I am putting rallycross on hold until this issue can be sorted out. I think I will end up routing it to the inside of the car through the firewall. This has undoubtedly caused tens of thousands of miles worth of damage.

Please warn any of your rear engine rally/rallycross friends. One of the competing Boxsters lost it's engine at this event. So that plus the AW11 makes two mid engine cars a victim of dirt ingestion. I know @Right2 had dirt ingestion engine failures as well and I have heard of someone with a rallyx W20 going through engines at high frequencies.

A new air filter is in again and some sacrificial oil so I can change it again soon and hopefully take some dirt out with it. I am starting to save my used oil and may send samples off to be tested.

The rear bumper would have a similar issue being that it is a low pressure zone. My options are high, front, or inside. High intake is most likely however inside is what I would like. I need to verify firewall rules first.

You definitely need a pre-filter for your filter. Get some filter in front of the initial air intake, or go with a CAI & DIY box made of square filters & duct tape to act as pre-filters. The larger your pre-filter setup likely the longer it will last if clogging issues become a concern. I'd bet an enclosure of Hepa filters around a CAI would do the trick....it would also be easily reversible for non-rally cross driving.
Yeah I got some emergency coffee filters (lol) to try fix between some pre airbox intake pipes but I never actually did that. I may test this theory out. The surface area could be an issue.

I am thinking about setting up a filter test rig to experiment with. Lexan or acrylic with interchangeable connections for different filter testing options and a vacuum gauge, etc. Filtration results would be both visual and measured by the pressure difference from the guage.

My suspension goodies came. Can't wait to put them on.

Image

Was going to put them on soon but the daily beater Yaris I bought needs a suspension overhaul. It was getting like bump-oversteer at 70mph. Very sketch. So I ordered a Moog front end kit and Bilstein B14 coilover kit.

Pic of said beater lol
Image

Also the MR2s rear main decided to blow so that's fun. Probably because I over-overfilled it. Gonna play the top off game until the Yaris is gtg. Also not gonna fix the rear main until after the 2AR swap because I ain't got time for that ish.

Should be picking up the other MR2 this month.

I have a solid mount wing that I just finished developing and is going for third party testing as soon as it gets here from the laser for a fitment check. Not sure if your still looking into any aero but thought I'd throw it out there. A "tadpole" tail will be next (see what I did there?).. I'm hoping to have a front splitter for sale at the end of spring as well. Here is the rough in for the pylon set up when I was trying a few ideas for an upper mount. I'll have some pictures of the upper mount when I set up the test fitment before I send her off.

Stingwray! I have seen you on FB and maybe IG. I am actually about to draw up some uprights for a swan neck mount but this is my backup plan. I have a 60 inch NLR wing I got cheap and a dual element conversion on the way. Also picked up some splitter idk the brand of from a buddy.

Well since I last posted a lot has happened. Had to replace entire home AC to the tune of $15k which probably delays this turbo project for a year. I intend to swap the 2AR in at some point this year.

Also my 65k mile 1ZZ is indeed very hurt from the dusty rallycross atmosphere. Soaked my pistons about a month ago and yesterday I heard some odd noise and my oil light flickered. Took most of a 5qt to get it level (luckily I had 5qt with me). Compression test when I got home yielded 133 137 140 145 psi. This makes sense because the dirt will be more inclined to hit cylinder 1 more due to particle weight/intertia.

Cyl 1 plug:

Image

It's running without noise now but I won't take it to a race and I have retired it from half daily driving.

Also finally brought home @Right2 's rally MR-S. Looking forward to giving it new life.

Awesome for sure! Well when you start getting stuff together shoot me a private message or email me at stingwrayrm@gmail.com
As I've stated before this is just my side business but I love cars and assisting in others adventures so I'd be more than interested in a labor free discount if you want to slap one of my logos on one of those fellas. Heck for me just to see one of my wing setups on a car and one of my logos slinging some dirt behind it would be payment enough.

Will do for sure!

Annnndd we're back.

Sourced a local 2005 engine + LSD trans.

Added MWR intake, 8lb flywheel, underdrive alternator and water pump pullies, and 2zz water pump. Also got the VSP lightweight crank pulley and a 3lb Antigravity ATX12-HD battery. At an exhaust shop now to get the cat back portion done. This reminds me, I need to learn how to weld.

RzR shifter and Group A hardtop going on this week and then this weekend is the 2nd Annual Pine Mountain Hillclimb. Car #80 in the Hillclimb Sport class (under C-SP).

Thanks I like it. Probably won't have time to paint it before the event but it's now all fit and the rear lexan is on good enough to drive tomorrow. Technically needs seals and more bolts but not worried about right now. Will definitely get more bolts before the race but not the window seals. We have to run with windows down anyways.

Well I entered Pine Mountain hillclimb with the goal of trimming off 8 seconds from last year's time and I ended up almost trimming off 11 and took home 5th in "Sport" class as well.

Image

Image

It was a very successful event despite the car being a bit oversteery at the limit. Had a minor off - with 0 damage - just a bit scary when you're staring down trees and cliffs.

I ran no rear ARB and full stiff up front even. I probably need some lighter spring rates in the rear and I am also making a ridiculously massive C-SP legal spoiler. I am not allowed to run wings in my class and these types of spoilers are the general go-to. I am making it very adjustable so it won't be so much of an air brake at different settings. Might have to play with the deck lid vents as well because they will bleed that high pressure air out. It will be 1/8" PC. I plan to do a splitter as well.

Image

Image

I also decided I am going for the class record at the Dragon so planning to run these 245 RT660s square. Gonna need to do some rolling and pulling, maybe tomorrow?

Image

Image

I'm also gonna be going standalone I guess in attempt to squeak every last bit of powerband I can get out of it - not allowed to open the engine, basically. Still haven't settled on one but leaning Haltech, Link, or EMU Black. It will be re-used for 2AR swap.

Not sure if the intake manifold is worth messing with. Probably not but I do have an extra. I also have a 3D printer. 🤔 Exhaust is getting another configuration as well. Basically a muffler right after the 2-1 collector. Gonna be rowdy.

Got the short "race" exhaust option welded up at a shop. Definitely shifted the powerband up. In 4th gear it is ~.7s quicker between 4.5k and 6k rpm. Would like to put it on a dyno and really see it. Previous exhaust on top, short on bottom. I love v-bands. Lol

Also got super legit official reusable vinyl number plates from Track Decals. I think the top needs to be red already...

ECU plans have been cancelled until the swap. Too much $$$ chasing maybe 10hp from a 1ZZ. I would love to actually but, nope.
