Programming a transponder key is not a secret and if it was it would seem kind of 'stoopid' to just pm it to anyone. The dealers would just rather you didn't know so you can get billed a half hour for 2 minutes of work. Anyway, so to program the key after you've had the local hardware store or whoever cut it to match the master:

get in the car
shut the doors
press and release the brake and gas pedal once
insert your master key into the ignition switch
press and release the gas pedal 5 times
press and release the brake pedal 6 times
remove master key
insert new key
press and release the brake and gas pedal once
wait 80 seconds
remove new key
press brake

and you're done. Something to note, during the 80 second wait you will see your alarm light blinking as if no transponder is present...when the key is done that light will go out because now your new key has a correctly programmed transponder. Lemme know if anyone has troubles with this and I'll see if I can find the site where I got the instructions originally. Also, the gas and brake dance steps that you have to do must be completed within 15 or 20 seconds of the previous step ...not really a hard thing to do but keep that in mind should you be reading the directions while doing it the first time.

I'll see if I can find that link to the store where I bought my key.

NOTE: The procedure below worked perfectly for my 2000:

Here's the correct procedure to program a new key:

  1. Enter the car and close all of the doors.
  2. Simultaneously depress and release both the brake and accelerator pedals just one time.
  3. Within five seconds, insert a working pre-programmed key into the ignition cylinder, and turn to the "on" position.
  4. Within fifteen seconds of turning the ignition, depress and release the accelerator pedal five times for a primary key. (Depress and release four times for a valet key.)
  5. Within twenty seconds, depress and release the brake pedal six times for a primary key. (Depress and release only five times for a valet key.)
  6. Turn the ignition to the "off" position and immediately remove the key.
  7. Within ten seconds of removing the key, insert the new key and turn it to the "on" position.
  8. Within ten seconds, depress and release the accelerator pedal once. The security light will then flash for 60 seconds and then turn off. When the security light stops flashing the programming should be complete.
  9. Start the vehicle to verify that programming was successful.

I also want to get a second key for my car. The dealer only gave me 1 master key and 1 valet key. By doing the necessary steps to program a second transponder key, is there anyway to accidentally reset your current program for the car? What happens if the steps are done wrong?

I tried the procedure as outlined in the first post, but didn't work. I think the key is to turn the vehicle on at certain points.

I tried the second procedure I found on automotiveforums.com and it worked perfectly...

I edited the first post to include that procedure.

And, it looks like you can do it even if you only have the valet key.

Can anyone confirm that this procedure works with the valet key instead of the master? I order 2 chipped keys, had them cut, went to program them only to realize my "master" from the previous owner was not a master at all. My car is stored at a buddies house right now and I don't know when I'll get over there to try this Thanks!

What worked for my 2004

I tried the locksmith charley procedures first, none worked. This one worked on the first try:
1. Doors closed, insert master key
2. Press/release gas pedal X 5
3. Press/release brake pedal X 6
4. Insert new key
5. Press/release gas pedal once (Security starts blinking)
6. Wait 60 seconds, or 'til Security stops blinking
7. Remove key
8. Press/release brake once

Hope this helps somebody. BTW, my Security light seemed to stop blinking in less than 60 seconds.

Hi, I'm a new owner of a 2001 Spyder. Unfortunately the car came with only a single key.

I bought 2 keys online and want to program them myself. Now I've read that Toyota only allows up to 3 keys per car. The new keys won't work until the old ones are deleted. Is this true?

If so, how do I delete the old, lost keys?

I followed the above steps and successfully programmed my new key.

One note though, my security light did not stop flashing. It maintained the same regular frequency. I waited more than a minute and tried to start the car. The engine cranked and I figure it worked.

Thank you everyone!

this worked for my 2000 spyder

Very nice thread - this worked the first time for me. The dealer wanted a bit over 100 bucks for the key and programming. I paid a total of 15 bucks for an off brand transponder key, got it cut for free at home depot and now have a working spare key.

Note the key itself is not being programmed. The key is not programmable. The key has a unique transponder chip with a unique code that is readable by a sensor in the column. The procedure programs the ECU to accept the transponder key code. Otherwise, very useful thread. Can't wait for my new key to get in to try it. That is all. LOL.

Im curious if i could cut a key for my wifes key ring, with no chip, and during programming hold her elantra key (which is chipped) up to the ignition, would it be tricked into allowing the elantras chip to start the car? would it even be close enough to do that if they were on the same key ring, but the key obviously wasnt the key in the ignition?

This is a great idea. Try it! I'll try it too. I've got a broken ignition key that I could salvage this way. I'll report back tomorrow.
