But...what if it’s not the stock ECU? And you don’t have any keys.

I can’t believe the situation I’m in. I bought a second MR2 with a 2ZZ conversion using a Celica ECU.
The new car had one key only and I have misplaced it in my house. So I now have the immobile 2ZZ blocking my 1ZZ MR2 in the garage. I’m assuming with the non-stock ECU that the code can’t be looked up. I’ve turned the house upside down to find the key but still no luck. Does anyone have any ideas? The 1ZZ Spyder has keys and works...could I swap the lock and keys and use them to reprogram the Celica ECU on the 2ZZ car? Other ideas?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Wipe ECU and new keys

I can do all the programming needed in this post. I charge $75 per ecu, includes return shipping. You just do the key dance with your new keys cut from elsewhere.
drfrisker You said you can reprogram a ECU for $75.00? Question of the day, would that leave all previous keys unworkable? I had my car keys stolen from my house for the car (thanks buglers!) and so I have been trying to figure out how to make the key they stole useless without swapping out the 7 locks that are on the car! I have one chipped key left.

Programming a transponder key is not a secret and if it was it would seem kind of 'stoopid' to just pm it to anyone. The dealers would just rather you didn't know so you can get billed a half hour for 2 minutes of work. Anyway, so to program the key after you've had the local hardware store or whoever cut it to match the master:

get in the car
shut the doors
press and release the brake and gas pedal once
insert your master key into the ignition switch
press and release the gas pedal 5 times
press and release the brake pedal 6 times
remove master key
insert new key
press and release the brake and gas pedal once
wait 80 seconds
remove new key
press brake

and you're done. Something to note, during the 80 second wait you will see your alarm light blinking as if no transponder is present...when the key is done that light will go out because now your new key has a correctly programmed transponder. Lemme know if anyone has troubles with this and I'll see if I can find the site where I got the instructions originally. Also, the gas and brake dance steps that you have to do must be completed within 15 or 20 seconds of the previous step ...not really a hard thing to do but keep that in mind should you be reading the directions while doing it the first time.

I'll see if I can find that link to the store where I bought my key.

NOTE: The procedure below worked perfectly for my 2000:

Here's the correct procedure to program a new key:

  1. Enter the car and close all of the doors.
  2. Simultaneously depress and release both the brake and accelerator pedals just one time.
  3. Within five seconds, insert a working pre-programmed key into the ignition cylinder, and turn to the "on" position.
  4. Within fifteen seconds of turning the ignition, depress and release the accelerator pedal five times for a primary key. (Depress and release four times for a valet key.)
  5. Within twenty seconds, depress and release the brake pedal six times for a primary key. (Depress and release only five times for a valet key.)
  6. Turn the ignition to the "off" position and immediately remove the key.
  7. Within ten seconds of removing the key, insert the new key and turn it to the "on" position.
  8. Within ten seconds, depress and release the accelerator pedal once. The security light will then flash for 60 seconds and then turn off. When the security light stops flashing the programming should be complete.
  9. Start the vehicle to verify that programming was successful.

Thanks guys! My dealer wanted $125 to program a key because it is a "very complex process". The numbered procedure worked perfectly for my 2005. I now have 3 masters and one valet!

Where are you all buying your blank transponder keys? A mentioned that his key from Ebay did not program. I've got an 04 spyder.
I ordered 2 from a dealer, and a flip key from EBAY (wrong blank, and then inserted a T44 plain key, which I cut down)
All of them worked fine.
I did have to run the sequence a few times to get the "cadence" down when I did the first one, but after that, I got the others on the first try.

I actually had more difficulty getting the remotes programmed, but not by too much.

I lost one of my keys and decided to try the instructions here to program a new one. This is the key I bought on Amazon: Transponder Key Blank Fits Toyota MR-2 Spyder With Do It Yourself Programming Instructions from Bartolete Keys (spyderchat won't let me add the link). Determined my old key was a master. Tried DaSpyda's instructions twice for my 2000 but it didn't take. Finally used the instructions that came with the new key and the second time worked! Don't know if it made a difference, but I used my master key (not the new, unprogrammed cut key) to lock and unlock the door (steps 2 & 3) on the second, successful try.

1. Make sure all windows are rolled up and all doors are shut.
2. From outside the car LOCK the car door with the key.
3. From outside the car UNLOCK the car door with the key>
4. Enter vehicle and close the door.
5. Start the car's engine (use your master key).
6. Turn engine off and remove key.
7. Simultaneously press then release both the brake and accelerator pedals.
8. Place master key in the ignition lock. (DO NOT TURN ON.)
9. Press and release the gas pedal 5 times.
10. Forcefully press and release the brake pedal 6 times.
11. Remove key.
12. Place new key in the ignition lock. (DO NOT TURN ON.)
13. Press and release the gas pedal 1 time.
14. Wait 60-80 seconds for the security light to stop blinking.
15. Remove new key from the ignition lock.
16. Press brake pedal 1 time to close programming cycle.
17. Wait 15 seconds for programming cycle to end.
18. Insert new key into ignition lock and start the vehicle.

Are you sure you have a Master Key ( Lite Goes Out exactly after the Key is Inserted ) .. Or do you have a Slave Key ( Lite goes out about 1.5 Seconds after the key is inserted )

So I just tried it and I guess I have a Slave key because the light went out about 2 seconds after I inserted it. I’m not sure what all that means, but I’m guessing it means I’m not programming my own key, huh? I just got this car and that is the only key that came with it. What are my options here?
