No they don't use batteries, you have to plug it in every time you want to use it.
Keyless entry doesn't do anything
OK this could be really simple or I could have to replace it...
I press the buttons on the factory remote and they do nothing. Do these things have batteries? Do I need to do one of the reset code instructions?

Solar powered. Read the owner's manual. Just leave the keys on the roof of the car on a sunny day and it'll be good as new.
Well, I'm glad you guys are having fun with this. I only blame myself for walking into that one. 2001 spyder, Will try replacing the battery. 
There is the problem, you are pressing the buttons. You don't press the buttons, the buttons press you. The fob was designed by Chuck Norris.
