Jumped in car this morning and went to start my 2000 mr2 spyder and it cranked but nothing else, first thing was i changed battery but still did the same thing, checked for spark and plugs are fine, tried to start again this time put foot on accelerator and it turned over for 5 secs and blow out a puff of black smoke. I gutted pre-cats when i first brought the car and changed plugs only a month ago, oil was changed and filter at same time. drove fine yesterday everything was normal. any thoughts?

If the car engine is turning (starter engaging) and the lights and everything is working fine, than its not the battery.

check wires going to the plugs

check spark plugs

Check fuel line and injectors

Black smoke means rich fuel mixture and flooded engine. I am guessing engine is not firing. Look everywhere to see that spark plug related wiring is in correctly and nothing came out loose. Also check fuses related to ignition. Good Luck

well new exhaust part didnt seem to make a difference so we did a compression test and our worst fear our engine is gone, no compression in a cylinder and the other 3 are weak! so now its off to find another engine, but need to know if i disconnect the battery will the ecu reset and need a relearn?

definitely maybe, just follow the relearn process if the neutral starts blinking when you start it up after the new engine goes in. In my family we have one that resets after power drains, one that used to reset after power drained but doesn't anymore, and one that doesn't reset after power drain.

100% result for starting problem

I just thought I would update this thread incase anyone else come across this issue. We worked out the exact cause.

while all cylinders are low on compression. cylinder 1 has a stuck open valve. this is the pure and simple cause of why the engine won't start. As to why its stuck I have not got the engine stripped yet to check it.

As for the SMT needing a relearn I have been talking to ralyrt who has taken heaps of SMT's off and has never done a single relearn. there seems to be a simple way of doing it without affecting anything.

thanks
