Hey all, new Spyder owner here for about 4 weeks. While doing maintenance and such I found the infamous SpyderChat and saw a ton of people doing variations of different Navpods so I thought it would be a good excuse to finally buy a 3D printer.

I printed out the 3D Navpod scan from thingiverse literally as my second and 3rd print. Went ok, but as we all find, that alone is useless. So I spent the next week learning Fusion 360 and some other things. So here is my 2 week progress.

Printed the original file. Realized its not symmetric and other problems. Made some prototypes to test print pattern, angles, do some scaling/corrections, fitment and such. Although i'm ok with post work bondo/sand but these days i'm lazy and i'll just be ok with spending more time here and working on fixing the print. You can see in the prototypes below, most all have rough edges somewhere from supports or bad angles, but i figured out how to get it better.

Here's basically yesterdays prints, as I'm still tweaking things.

I've designed it to fit a single din JOYING AUTO 7" android screen (no volume knob version).

I was able to figure out a good print angle for quality compromise on all visible sides when printing the front and back cover separately (i had a one point thought it'd be easier as 1 piece but it was always a sacrifice for the front face or back cover in quality). Now smooth at all visible angles.

Instead of redrawing the cover, i thought it'd be neat to just fix the problems with the original scan so I can keep the original wrinkle pattern in the print. And extended the vent holes since the radio will be mounted here now.

Added the single din bracket at an angle to match the pocket depth.

Added some LCD brackets to just slide in the new 7" LCD.
Here's the Joying auto 7" screen. Fits great, snug.

I deleted the old latches and redesigned kind of a locking latch that you screw in the the bottom to hide it, and it holds much better now.

All assembled.

I need to clean up that sticky thing from the pocket rubber at the bottom..

I'm still doing a bit of tweaking to refine some things, I'm currently printing a new face cover that completely hides the chrome bezel. But at this point, it's just me being picky about finishing touches.

Everything is print in ABS. I haven't tried any other filament as I may just do a matte UV coating on my own.

I'm probably just going to run pwr/rem/gnd with RCAs leading to the amp to keep wires going up simple for now. The radio comes with GPS, 4G antennaes/wifi and such that you just sticky to the top of the DIN bracket inside. The mic hole isn't covered but you can use a better external mic too.

I know it's my first post, but the Spyder and the Navpod project has been fun lol. I was thinking of selling these, but it seems most the Navpod threads have gone dark so not sure if anyone still is looking for them.

Awesome work! Now i've got to ask, and granted this is wishful thinking. As much as I want to do this, the thought of of the old radio being there is too redundant for my liking. Any plans on a print to take the place of the old radio? A small storage or something? I have no skills and have to live vicariously through you haha, all the same, great work!

Great to hear! If I don't change the size of the actual navpod, a gauge plate would be easy. I was also thinking an alternative phone dock style plate with a qi wireless charger.

I just got stuck with other side projects. Gotta finish door panel upholstery, made a steering wheel aftermarket controls mount, then did a piston soak with B12. Screwed myself and started the car and forgot the wrench on the crankshaft and snapped the bolt lol, will be digging that out this weekend.

Awesome!

I use this:

Its made to fit perfectly, I use for Android auto, youtube and spotify but it does android auto and apple car play using both wireless or wired methods.

There are other Chinese android brands that would fit, just check the dimensions of the screen

I have a sony gsx-gs900 head unit that came in my car that i like. 100w 4 channel output sounds great with the polk speakers the previous owner installed.

I would love to have apple car play on the dash though, mostly for google maps. The gs manual says it will receive android signals through usb.

Think it would be possible to run the joy unit for the screen and run the joy to the gsx via usb for sound?

Any progress on the climate control radio swap.
I am thinking of upgrading my system to the new Sony ES mobile that is about to come out.
Still working on a fitment and new mounting. My original designs had the new climate controls too high not leaving enough space for the screen I want to sit flush. Would be further but ran into some other crap on another project that's been holding me up lol.

The Sony Mobile ES like a lot of newer high end decks comes in two varieties. The larger 10" floating screen and the traditional 6.75" screen that matches the double din dimensions.
I think it would be harder to accept the smaller screen as a flush option because it would have to fit a double din dimension exactly as these newer configurations are different. Some like the deck I have now occupy the full double din space. Some of the newer decks are a full screen but the back end is either a short double din or a single din with a screen that hangs down like the Sony ES. A lot of these tend to be fixed to the screen which would make angling it difficult unlike the android unit you have where the screen can pivot. Basically it might have to be deck specific to work just like installing it in the NAV pod.

You would know best but I think the best way is the 10" floating screen single din mount but have it adjustable for depth. The screen is now hight adjustable which is a large mounting range and can have some overlap on the dash with the ability to tilt towards the driver. I do not particularly like floating screens but I think in this case it might work better with a lot of decks where being able to adjust them is crucial and it can offer some forgiveness with respect to where the climate controls sit.

Ah yeah i looked up the Sony Mobile ES, the screen even though is 10" or 10.1" like the screen I intend to use, the dimensions are slightly bigger for the Sony version as to not fit flush, so it will be floating. The screen i intended will be flush and not floating and is still 10.1", mainly bezel differences it looks like. I will probably try to do a double din as so anyone using single din can just use a converter bracket. Double dins may just need some kind of faceplate to fill the space like normal. Hopefully this weekend i fix/finish what I'm working on and can take better measurements after I move the climate controls to see what space there is.

I am happy that you had a look at the Sony ES. It appears that Sony is coming out with the same version but with a 6.75 inch screen. It is basically your typical double din screen unit but it uses a single din mounting.

Here are my concerns. As you can see the screen is non adjustable and it mounts from the top. Some of the other units like this has the screen in the middle or on the bottom. Do you think this will fit in what you have planed? do you think it will fit in your Nav pod modification? If not maybe the floating screen in the location would be better as the screen has a wide range of adjustment from top to bottom and side to side.

I think the floating 10.1" screen will look better than a full double din thats slightly smaller than the spyder console gaps with a frame. I have a floating 10" or maybe its 11" in my dodge, and although it's not a flush doubledin (which i could have done), the floating larger screen did look better. I think it's more normal now since many dash consoles in newer vehicles look sort of like this. My plan originally had a floating screen radio in mind but I happen to find a version of the radio with a screen that will hopefully fit flush as far as dimensions look.

I think you are right. I will go with the older 10.1" screen model especially now that the price as come down significantly.
It should hide whatever gaps are behind it.
I better start saving quick since these ES units go up in value in the used market once they are discontinued.

This may be what i am after.

I kind of got what I wanted after all. This is perfect. It clears the glove box and clears my leg and knuckles when I shift gears. I can still operate the climate controls from the back. The screen looks stunning in person being matte black like slate.

I like the s2000 seats and the tach. Where did that tach come from?

What is the exact carpuride model you have above?

Looks like it's about 8.5mm wider than the screen I use. The height looks the same. I will see if I can adjust the sides to make a carpuride version.

But I'll need a measurement of the 4 dimensions, 2 of which is marked in red below. I'll also need the height and width of the back panel marked in green. If you have a digital caliper for accurate measurements in mm that'd be great.

It'll be good to know the green measurements as so the lcd brackets don't interfere with the plugs.

I got the w701 model

I will grab some measurements at some point today.
Butchered together an option for now so i can play with the screen.

took a couple hours with some spare plastic, soldering gun/plastic welder and such.

looks hideous in the car. Looks mediocre from afar
