Oh Boy! A new noise and vibration!

There are a lot of threads on noises and tapping/ticking/etc. on here. I've even started one, (besides this one). But something new has started that I haven't been able to pin down. It started about two weeks ago as a rapid tapping sound in the background when the car is in gear and under power. It has gotten gradually loader over the days and I haven't driven it since Sat. It doesn't seem to make the noise when the clutch is in or the trans in neutral, only in gear under acceleration. Even very slow acceleration when starting off.
Transmission? Bearings?
It doesn't affect the performance of the engine that I can tell. It almost sounds like something loose and getting looser but I can't find anything.
And as I said, only when in gear and under acceleration.
Any ideas or experiences with something like this?
I'll try to get a recording if I can.

i had the same thing in my last car, it was my axles going bad. wouldnt make any noise unless the car was under some load.

I concur it is a good possibility it is your CV joints. Check the condition of the boots.
I think it is the CV joint making the noise. Upon closer examination I have found evidence of grease leaking from the passenger side inboard boot. It seems to be leaking very near the end where it clamps to the axle. If it has already started making noise does that mean it is toast or can I just get a new boot kit and re-grease the joint ? How can I tell? Wiggle it?
Any advice is appreciated.

New boot. The ones on the inside are easy to change.

Although.. if it's already making noise I'd wonder if damage is already done.

It's done. The joint now has play in it and that is what is causing the sound.
Sorry to ask this. I know there must be a past posting about this but I can't find one using the search. I need to know exactly what needs to be disconnected at the wheel in order to get it out of the way so I can remove the passenger side cv assembly. Thanks.
