It seems that power steering issues are common on the MR.

I suppose it may have something to do with the fact that the pump sits at the back of the car while the steering is far away at the front....

Anyone have any maintenance tips for avoiding power steering issues seeing that its quite costly to repair?

Besides maintenance, one thing i know is that you should avoid turning the steering to full lock. especially when the car is cold.

the mr-s uses a proprietary power steering fluid. its only made by toyota and most toyota dealerships dont even know about this

using ANY other fluid will kill your pump. this accounts for probably 95% of the issues around here

the rest seem to be dirty units / other easy fixes..

put only the OEM toyota power steering fluid in, and never over-fill it, and you should never have problems.

this is the stuff:
