Hey all,

Having an issue with my shifter cables. Laft and right works fine, but up and down requires some extra force. It almost feels as if the cable is encountering friction somewhere in its travel.

I removed both cables from the shifter mechanism and tried to move them back and forth by hand and it's the same thing. One moves freely and the other takes a lot of force to move.

Any troubleshooting steps I can do to isolate the problem?

It could be frayed. That could make it bind. Could also be rusted or dried out. If you can get the boots off, you can try lubricating it and see if you get lucky.

Just an update for anyone coming across this thread in the future. Ended up pulling the cables and it was indeed frayed which was causing the bind.

Had some spare SW20 cables lying around so I tested the fitment and the brackets don't line up so the only option is $250 from Toyota for replacement cable or getting lucky and finding a used pair in good condition.
