How about a nice Fall drive for all us Texans. We need to select a fun route. Something in the hill country works for me. I'm not sure of specific routes, but we cna nail that down later. Vote for your favorite date. November should be nice top down weather.

I will try my hardest to be there
Saturday would be the best day for me, but I should be able to do
Sunday if that's what ya'll want
I wouldn't mind burnin off a tank of gas...
and maybe some tires like LR did last time

Does anyone in Austin know a couple good routes and maybe a good BBQ shop for lunch?
I might know someone whos organized a hill country drive or two complete with food stops and photo ops.

BTW 10am is getting a LATE start if one is to avoid any traffic on any of the fun roads.

Some questions to consider:

How long of a drive are y'all willing to do?
What kind of food do you want, German or BBQ?

I'll do my best to be there!
Texas BBQ would be my preference.
Looking forward to it. Hope to have Gregg's engine dress-up kit installed by then.
Thanks!

So...

Where will we meet up in Austin? I'm not too familiar with much of Austin other than where the capital is, Congress, and 6th st. A central, well known location would be good instead of out in the boon docks cause I dont want to miss the meet cause I cant find anyone. Man my ex owns a really sweet 05 MR2, I would bring her, but I can't stand the bitch...I think I'll just not tell her about this one...

Lost27 said he has a route for us that includes good BBQ. He also said 9am is a good time to take off from Autin to beat the crowds.

Lost, can you pick a meeting spot and publish the route for us in this thread?

I have 4 or 6 of those little walkie talkies I think. That should be enough for most of the cars to have one, but if you have a couple, feel free to bring them. I'd like to see one in every car.

Also, if you can each send me a PM with your name, car color, car year, and cell phone number I will be happy to make a list for everybody to have one in their car and also for us to hunt down stragglers when we are preparing to roll out.

If past experience is any indication, it might work better to post contact information, and let people contact you the day of the event. That's what I'd do, anyway.

I say this because, having gotten lost trying to find one of the Austin meetup spots in the past, being able to call someone and ask for directions was a lot more useful that it would have been to have someone call me, and ask why I'm late.

A phone list isn't a bad idea but I don't really put much faith in RSVPing for a meet. Not everyone shows up thats says they will and the group ends up waiting around. I also don't like publishing the route on the internet, call me paranoid but I'd rather err on the side of caution.

Just some things to know:

1. This isn't a race, it's a cruise, so please leave the showboating at home. I've been on cruises that have had accidents and others where APBs were put out on the group. Not exactly stuff you want to happen. The speeds will be brisk but nothing crazy. Please, please PLEASE, give proper distance between cars!

2. Show up with a full tank of gas.

3. Bring a walkie talkie if you have one.

4. I don't wait for stragglers, meaning if you can't show up to the meeting place on time or have the decency to let me know how far out you are then you might want to stay home. It's not fair to the group to wait for one or two people. I'll PM anyone my Cell number if they need it.

5. Some of the roads we'll be on don't have real good cell reception, plan on that.

6. Depending on if we go to Cooper's or The Saltlick be aware that The Saltlick doesn't take credit cards and doesn't split the bill... I'm hesitant to even take a large group there anymore because someone (me) almost always get stiffed with the bill.

7. These things are FUN you'll see some of the best of what Hill Country has to offer and enjoy some GOOD BBQ.

p.s. If anyone needs a place to crash I've got a spare bedroom and plenty of floor space as long as you can put up with my 80lbs Boxer

:) !!!

I will be in '00 silver spyder. cell number is 979-417-7308...i dont mind putting it up on here...sexual predators and stalkers dont usually roam around spyderchat.com. It would be cool if I can take up that offer for the floor cause I dont really want to fork out the hotel money (gotta save up for a PS3, haha). I have two walkie talkies as well.

Dumb question: how long should I plan for the cruise to take (time-wise)?
I'll be in New Braunfels for Wurstfest over the weekend, then heading back to Waco after the cruise. Just want to be able to let the SO know how long the trip will be.
Thanks!

As I recall, we usually get done between 3:30 and 5:00, depending on where the route takes us. When I lived in College Station, I got back from these in time to get a late dinner.

Edit: Usually want to be moving out by 9:30 or so, so figure six hours, including a stop for lunch somewhere.

Route 1
Starting point: http://tinyurl.com/yj6aq2

A northern route originating out of northwest austin and ending in llano. Round trip distance: ~172 miles
Round trip drive time (not including lunch): about 3 hours 41 minutes
Time to destination: ~2 hours
Time from destination to Austin: 1 hour 45 min.
Highlights:
One of the twistiest roads in Austin, a nice panoramic overlook, a castle, and Lake Buchanan.

Route 2

Starting point: http://tinyurl.com/ya489x
A southernly route that starts in southwest austin and ends in llano.
Round trip distance: ~190 miles
Round trip time (not including lunch): about 4 hours.
Time to destination: 2.5 hours.
Time from destination to Austin: 1 hour 45 min.
Highlights:
A nice intro to hill country road, Blanco, Luckenbach, Fredricksburg (we can come back after lunch).

I can go either way but both routes end up at the same restauraunt in Llano with some of THE best pit style BBQ in Texas... at least from what I've found. I know the drives seem long but if you're going to come this far for a meet might as well make it worth it.

Let me know what y'all are up for. If this is absolutly too much driving for anyone, speak up and I'll see if I can come up with a shorter route. The majority will win here.

there's a great bbq stop called Saltlick. I'm pretty sure that it's off 360 which is a scenic highway.
Yikes... not THAT Saltlick... thats the upscale bastard offshoot of the original one in Driftwood. The problem with the Saltlick is they only accept cash and don't split the bill which in turns leads to someone (usually me) picking up the slack.

360 doesn't hold a candle to the roads involved in going out to Llano not to mention all the stoplights, left lane vigilantes, and traffic on 360.

Well, the first thing we need is a Route choice as they both have different starting points. I've done both routes before and already have nice big easy to find starting locations selected that have worked well in the past.

Route 1's starting point would be at the 620 & 2222 intersection in west austin.

Route 2's starting point is the 290 & 71 split near Oak Hill.

Either route is fine by me, you won't regret the BBQ I promise.
