Found this bad boy about ~2 hours away:

2001 Toyota MRS 2zz & 6-speed swapped
190k+ on the body . 80k on engine and 6-speed transmission, which i pulled from the doner car (05 pontiac vibe gt) personally .
note..I did not put the milage on the add ..FB did .just to clarify.
Swapped on the 1zz oil pan and fuel rail while the engine was out and installed a new clutch kit.
A Factory Toyota shift selector conversion shaft/mechanism was purchased from Toyota, and the rest of the linkage conversion ,and reverse lockout modifications were done by myself, and i can honestly say it all works as it should. The reverse selector/lock out works perfectly.the transmission has no grinds ,no pop outs, no issues whatsoever.
A custom bridge mount was made for the passenger side engine mount.again no issues there
On the wireing side of things I converted to a 1 wire knock sensor , which allowed for running the engine on an 01 "last revision " usdm celica gts ecm .That allows for VVTL-i engagement at 6200rpms and the redline is moved up to 8300rpms..which makes for a nice little power bump. And all the VVTL-I noise your ears can handle.
New brakes were installed all around
Cobb intake/maff housing
Custom "ppe style" 4-1 header and 2.5 in exhaust system. The car still has the Factory muffler which may be robbing a few hp but , i consider it a fair trade off, as the noise levels are very livable..car sounds completely stock...well , below 6200rpms it does . LOL!!. I'll leave it to the new owner to install an actual ppe header and whatever muffler they can tolerate.
I dynod the car for a baseline after the swap and it made 151whp. That calculates to about 180hp at the flywheel ,which is spot on with what the factory rating on the 2zz-ge is.so the engine is definitely very healthy. And 150whp may not seem like much..but, in a car that is just a little over 2k lbs Thats plenty , and this thing is surprisingly quick.
The top was replaced with an oem Factory cloth top..not some cheap vinyl aftermarket replacement, and it is in perfect condition.
New windshield installed last year.
The radio is a newer scion head unit.
Seats are 2015 Brz leather and Alcantara buckets ,mounted on custom rails.
Front strut bar and a couple no name under body braces installed..nothing fancy but they get the job done.
The car has a replica trd 2000gt body kit that could use some fine tuning.
Recently added smoked supra front marker lights, a rear duckbill spoiler, and a vis carbon hood, but the clear coat on the hood is trashed ,and there are a coupe rubbed through spots. It looks good in pics, but rough in person..I am working on getting it re-cleared ,but no promises on the end results.
Car will come with a few extra sets of oem wheels.some painted ,and one 100% original set.The stock hood ,that was painted flat black (see pics),a spare rear bumper (oem black),spare tail lights,an engine lid (oem black), which will allow you to just swap this one on, if you don't care for the duckbill spoiler currently on the car, instead of dealing with patching mounting holes an all that. There's also a spare center console somewhere and some odds and ends im sure I'm forgetting.
And no. I am not interested in selling anything separately..everything goes w/ the car as a PACKAGE DEAL ONLY. Car has newer shocks but i may go to coilovers soon .which will in turn bump my asking price. so ill most likely hold off on that and see how this goes first.
Now for the bad.. The car has some purely cosmetic flaws that show its age/ milage. It could use a paintjob ,some fine tuning on the body kit ,and maybe a pair of headlights as the ones currently on the car are fogged, they work fine just look fogged..and that's about it .
Mechanically the car needs nothing.it recently passed CT emissions. No issues, no check engine lights .This car is a blast to drive and i wouldn't hesitate to get in it and drive it anywhere. I don't care about the cosmetics much ,obviously lol.all i really care about is joy and excitement of ripping this little go-kart around.and let me tell you. VVTL-i engaged in any gear will put a smile on your face every time.
PRICE IS FIRM $8000
What are your thoughts on this car? Any questions I should ask now? Anything specific I should look for during physical inspection?

Without pictures were kinda flying blind ......
Sounds like he just through it together and looking to double his money . Says the body kit don't fit and needs paint job . Needs headlights ($500) and probably suspension ($250 -$1500) . Also sounds like the exhaust maybe cobbled together so you can plan at least $500 -$1000 . I also don't like when they fib .... makes think I can't believe anything they say , there was no cloth oem tops .
You'd be much better off buying a stock lower mileage spyder for not much more money .

was a facebook marketplace find, wasn't sure about linking rules, so posted the marketplace URL without the facebook.com above:

It is odd he says OEM Factory Cloth top, not "cheap vinyl" despite the OEM top being Vinyl.

Just keeping my eyes peeled for a good spyder nearby and looking for opinions.

Maybe T-Bone will complete his soul searching soon.

Pros:
-2zz/6speed swapped
-Clutch replaced
-New soft top
-Seats swapped
-01 ecu with 8250 rpm redline (doesn’t add power, only increases redline a bit)

Cons:
-Cosmetic issues on a replica body kit likely has questionable gaps/fitment as well as paint issues (expensive bodywork bill unless you have the tools/skills to do the work yourself)
-“Custom” header is likely garbage — limits power

+/- items
-Stock exhaust keeps noise under control but limits power
-Stock radiator may not keep up with cooling depending on your climate & driving style
-? miles on suspension

I would do the usual stuff such as ask about mileage on the suspension, check for rust under the car, make sure the frame is straight, ask about oil consumption (yes engines that aren’t the 00-02 1zz can still consume oil). If OBDII is something that you need for your state inspection I would confirm the car will pass (ad seems like it would).

There are no pictures but cosmetically the car sounds like a hot mess. If that’s something that you care about (personally I don’t expect a 20yr old car to be near perfect but I still care how an attention magnet convertible looks) then I would put a lot of weight on that. Trying to fix bad bodywork/paint on an aftermarket body kit can be on par with the cost of a swap itself, especially if it’s multiple body panels on an aftermarket kit that need work.

As far as mechanically, there’s often no way to reliably verify mileage on a swapped engine. I would inquire as to mileage at the time of the swap, either way the 6speed & new clutch is definitely a plus. Final decision depends on your goals & budget...if you’re trying to have a clean looking swapped car for under $10k this doesn’t sound like the car for you. If you’re ok with looking clapped out but going fast[er] then this car sounds more appealing.

FWIW if my assumption regarding the cosmetics is correct IMHO the significant cosmetic issues outweigh the pros at this price, unless you are able to do that work yourself.

Edit: Looked at the pictures, none of them show how the car currently sits (no duckbill in any pic), nor does he make an effort to highlight the cosmetic issues...both of which are always foreshadowing

Added facebook link with pictures, but yeah - I figured I'd have to pay another ~$4k+ for a paint job down the line.

goals & budget: Goal is a fun car for street summer drives. Budget is flexible, don't necessarily need a 2zz, I hear the 1zz is plenty of fun. Was even considering adding 1zz turbo over a 2zz swap if I got a good low-mileage Spyder some time down the line, after all the suspension needs and various replacements.

lol... did something and this thread now needs to be approved.

Oh well, reached out to the seller and asked about the pre-swap mileage and mileage on the suspension, I basically ask 3 times, and he asks me to read the add in response 3 times.

"What was the mileage on the engine/transmission at the time you pulled from the donor car? How much mileage on the suspension?"

"Its all clearly stated on the add..soo"

So I guess maybe all the work was recently done?

I am in CT and, for what it's worth, I can tell you this ad has been up and down on facebook Marketplace for at least a year at the same price. I'd be impressed by this as a shop class project, but I'd be hard pressed to consider spending $8k on it.

Someone that wants to sell you a car yet goes out of their way to withhold information or purposely give vague info is not worth another second of your time. Walk away and don't look back.

Whelp, I lied. Thought about it some more, and decided to go check it out. Figured he was just sick of getting spammed on Facebook, after trying to sell it last year and this year.

The body was as expected, not great. The seats were comfortable, though - New top new windshield, all good.

The 2zz engine flies. Oh, man when that VVTi kicks in, all-smiles. The new (stock) clutch did not like it, would have to upgrade if I plan on really staying in those high rpms.

Someone else reached out to him and payed for a Toyota multi-point inspection. Everything looked good except the exhaust system, Fuel Tank Cap Gasket (honestly not sure what this is) , Head Lights are badly fogged, front and rear rotors need to be replaced, Steering Linkage (hopefully just worn and not a huge issue? - service estimate listed rear sway links)

Hopefully all those won't be too expensive to fix/replace.

As for the body, I convinced myself I'd be able to do a Vinyl Wrap, myself. So hopefully ~$800to get the outside looking good.

Took my new baby up to a local shop, "Ron's Toy Shop" in Manchester, NH. ( Honestly not sure if there's a good shop or a better near me, but this one was "Toyota/Lexus specialist" ) One of the guys there has a gen2 MR2 and was excited to look at mine. Just a quick inspection, rotors looked fine to him and he said it brakes good, which I agree with.

Engine swap he said looked "Super clean" and he asked where it got done. I replied with "some guy in CT".

All in all super happy with my purchase - gonna have them estimate out a full exhaust system I'll be pretty happy.

As for the body work, hopefully I can get it looking good. Looking like way more work than sand + wrap. More like sand + bodyfiller + sand + primer + sand then wrap. Don't know how to fix gaps and stuff on the body kit, but I like the body kit and obnoxious hood scoop.

Excited to get to work, can't even get in to register the car until next week.
