From the Denso website, it appears there are two different OEM O2 sensors, one for the upstream (234-4624) and one for the downstream (234-4603). The universal sensor, however, is the same part for both upstream and downstream (234-4209).

My suspicion is that the difference in part numbers for upstream v downstream is due to harness length, and other than that they are the same. Is this the case?

Well if we are taking about the 02 sensor after the cat it is a bit different in the thickness of the nut.
A non issue as I have used the smaller nutted one with no problems.
