What would make a turbo-like whistle with no turbo?

My son's car has a whistle like a turbo when you initially apply a heavy foot. Doesn't seem to affect performance, but could this be something to be concerned about? If it won't hurt anything I think we may keep it because it kinda sounds cool...

Anyone have any tips for finding exhaust leaks?
For exhaust leaks, set a shop-vac to blow, and connect it to the exhaust pipe. If you have a dual exhaust, block off the other exit. Then feel around for air escaping. This is the easy way to do it, as you can do it when the exhaust is cold and you won't burn your hands.

Plebian, you may have an intake or vacuum leak. You can take a propane torch and turn it on without igniting it, and run it around your vacuum lines and intake while the engine is running. If the engine revs up a little when you're near an area, you've found your leak.
LOL oops i read this wrong... i thought his son bought one of these dumb things

K, located it down to the bottom of the throttle body (sprayed carb cleaner and it revved when I got there). That would be a leak in the idler vacuum hose, correct? Seems likely to me since it does it on the initial pull but once the engine gets its rpms up it stops, it only lasts that first quarter of a second I slam it.
woo woo!!!

WOW... what a good non-violent way to get back at ppl you hate.
