We finally have some good data on why it is a bad idea to do a 2zz swap with stock 1zz exhaust.

Mods on the car: ppe intake, Che swap header, stock 1zz midpipe (with cat) stock 1zz muffler, UR alternator, and water pump pulley, fidanza flywheel with exeedy oem replacement clutch.

The car is down about 30-35 horsepower from what we typically see with a free flowing exhaust on the stock (celica) ecu.

That is pretty anemic. He has a double whammy then. I've seen Che header dynos on the 2zz and they are usually in the 150-hp range (slightly higher). So what do you think the 1zz exhaust steals in terms of HP? 3-6hp?

Not to mention the stock cat in place causing a bottleneck before the stock exhaust even comes into play...

Strike one..Che header
Strike two..Stock downpipe/flex couplings. The stockers have an inner liner that necks down to 1.3 inch ID. The pipes before and after the liner are at least a 1/4 inch larger.
Strike three..The stock muffler, it is very quiet but does not flow that great for a 2zz. I routinely swap between the stock muffler for daily driving and a straight through Borla single exit muffler. The Borla is not too bad for noise but it does drone a bit so for just driving around I trade the 8 HP (copilot dyno) hit for a super quiet ride. I am old and have ringing in the ears from decades of car/motorcycle/airplane noise exposure so I try to keep it quiet. If you like driving around with a loud muffler/top down/radio blasting you are going to end up like me.

I wish it was getting a better exhaust, but the customer wanted this despite our warnings that this would be the result. At the end of the day the customer gets what the customer wants. We were sorely tempted to bolt on a full PPE exhaust (header MP and muffler) but we just don't have the free time for that right now.
