Here is the detailed story of the process of remaking one of the most popular mods for the Spyder, Mongo's.
Using the large deflector template (generously posted by cyclehead) I have come up with a new design for a deflector. The same old goodies of yesteryear apply to this new design. They install with a wedge fit between the A-pillar plastic and the rubber window seal. Windows can be rolled up with deflectors installed and .118 inch high visibility scratch-resistant UV-protected acrylic will be utilized. The material is approved by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 205 for driver visibility and safety. To keep these looking beautiful, all visible edges will be laser cut and bending procedures will be preformed by myself. Every set is hand test fit and massaged as needed.

Chongos are currently being manufactured, remaining sets will be sold at $55 plus shipping.

Micro Chongos are now available for $40 shipped within the United States, Only 6 sets are available and are ready for immediate shipping.
These are the same great deflectors except they are smaller for more entry-exit room and have a distinct style of their own.

Here is the new "micro chongo," one might call them a mongo....


All Chongo's install and remove without modification to the vehicle and retain full functionality of your side windows. They are intended to sit just below the weatherstripping fold where your side windows exit. You can view through the acrylite to see the passenger side view mirror, the regular model extends past the side view mirror where the micro has the seam directly center.

Install
All new deflectors are labeled left and right for your convenience.
Chongo's are not Ambisexterous™. Meaning the left-side Chongo will not go on the right A-pillar and vise versa. If you are ever concerned about which Chongo you can holding, sit down in the drivers seat and hold it up to the pillar. Does the bottom-edge sit flat against the door? Your holding the correct side if it does. Using this method you can determine the top/bottom & left/right orientation.
To install liberally apply J-lube to the weatherstripping (just kidding). Slightly pry back on the A-pillar plastic lip and insert the forward edge near the final installation point. Hold the Chongo from the forward and rear edges and work it in as far as possible. After opening and closing the door several times to find out the installation distance, slowly lower it down till you are about an 3/4" from the door plastic. Adjust the position and repeatedly open and shut the door with the window up to verify installation. Clean with soap and water!

I just had a moment to review Mongo's thread and saw pictures of both his large and small sets. It would appear my design is significantly larger, basically the straight length of the A pillar. This does not impede me from entering but is still a noteworthy consideration.
Did the smaller sets function adequately? Seems like folks flocked to the large.

Sorry forgot to include that in the description. They attach simply and firmly between the A pillar plastic and the rubber window seal. A little pry on these pillars will displace two clips and you can slide them in even easier.
This evening I practiced entering and exiting the vehicle with my prototype. I reviewed the drawing and made some adjustments. Tell me what y'all think.

Looks like he cut off the corner, the darkened part of drawing, marked A, to facilate getting in and out of seat. His are larger than the original large Mongo’s.

In answer to how well the smaller ones worked in comparison, the large ones permitted a match to burn at speed with windows down, the smaller one would blow it out. The smaller ones blocked out 90% of what the larger ones did. The smaller ones were less noticeable, less obtrusive, these new ones look to be larger, more noticeable than even the large Mongo’s.

When driving with my wife, my concubine, or my girlfriend, with top down, taller widescreen up, they would use the larger Mongo’s, while I used the smaller ones...so it depends on the person sitting in the seat as to their preference. If I still drove much on street I would get a pair of these, just for the choice of the other person. It is just a car for pleasure, so make it so, for both occupants.

Hey folks, take a look at these revisions of both the large and small.
In comparison to Small Mongo's, Revision D (Halo's) is slightly longer in the A pillar length. I verified this using the old photographs on M's thread, page 24. This will allow for more wind protection while still maintaining the ease of vehicle entry and exit.
For the Revision C, of the larger sets, I've greatly reduced the obstructive nature similar to the originals with a slightly more aggressive appearance and wind coverage that extends the entire straight length of the A pillar.

I like the direction this is heading. I was able to fit both drawings on the same 16x16 sheet and sharing three laser cuts will add only a bit more time spent on the machine. Unfortunately it doubles the workload on the labor (the only thing that cost real monies).


Aluminum got expensive so I doubled checked my dimensions and came up with quick prototypes. They are ghetto but they accurately depict the space premium.

Thanks, Grumpy that description helped me out a bit. My prototype right now is sheet aluminum. I'm about to redraw these again, taking into consideration what y'all have said maybe its best to try for two sizes cut from the same sheet. It would yield more triangles but take more labor to complete the bends. Supplying both sizes to the customer sounds ideal. Thanks for the input fellas, keep it coming, remember y'all are the boss around here!

Thanks for the offer Fuz, but I think you better hold on to that artifact. Between my prototypes and the competency of the producers, we will be okay!


Looks like there are 4 more Dibs to be called on double sets! If you know any other owners please key them in on this acquisition they will appreciate it. The reason I'm cutting it off at ten is so there will be adequate supply for those wanting one in the future.

On a side note, looks like we are all set to give green lights to the producer. After I get them the files and make sure they are square on procedures I will accept payments and send out PMs. Was thinking about using paypal and quickpay (some new thing, lots of banks use).

I wish I could sell them all as double sets but that doesn't leave enough dough for a second run if needed. The cost of each manufacture alone is more than Mongo was charging for a set :/

I accepted a payment yesterday without a username attached, but it's alright I've printed your label and I'll keep a lookout for which member it was.
