Installing Celica Seats

Attached are instructions to install the MR2 seat rails on Celica seats. If you have a 2003 or later MR2, the passenger seat will have an additional crossbar as noted in the instructions. My understanding is it was for attaching a child seat. The only tricky parts are installing the connecting tube for the recliner, and not trying to remove the seat height adjuster knob until the seat cushion is unbolted. Unbolting first gives more room to pull out the clip.

The seats that work are 2000 -2005 Celica GT and Celica GTS seats. The GT seats were cloth in a couple color combinations, and the GTS were leather. The primary source would be salvage yards, although some popup on eBay or other places like Craigs list. Since all of the cars are getting a bit old, finding a really nice set takes patience

Does anyone know how much the celica seats weigh? I'm thinking of re-seating, but I'd like to lose some weight if I do, vs. a lateral move, or adding weight. I actually had a Celica GTS for a spell, but it was years ago, for less than a year, and I honestly cannot recall if they were more comfortable and/or supportive than the stock MR2 seats, or not? Opinions welcome, especially to you have clearly been sold enough to make the swap!

I don't know exactly what they weigh but I'd guess for everyone here other than @Node it would be essentially considered the same weight. You're reusing the seat rails & the cushions are very similar to FL seats.

The Celica seats are more comfortable than PFL seats by a significant amount IMO & very worth swapping.

If the seat was in full recline before taking it apart as indicated in the instructions, pulling the lever should not change anything. If it did, you might be able to temporarily assemble the cross over tube and the side frames without the seat back, and manipulate each side to the same full recline position with the lever lifted. That should work. Them pull apart and install with the back.

You may have to assemble one side frame to the seat back to get some leverage, Install the crossover tube into that side, and then into the other side frame however it lines up to the seat back, lift the level and then force the unattached side frame into alignment on the seat back. It make take some experimentation to find a method that works, but the goal is to be in full recline on both sides.

I forgot what process I did in that situation, but basically take the seat pad off (unscrew) and then adjust that rod and the seat back where the position of the seat back mechanism is at. Then test the seat back if it's doing the full range. You can't really screw it up and you'll know if it's working properly by the range of the seat back movement.
