Leak at Speed Sensor after Oil Change

Hey Guys,

I recently changed the transaxle fluid to redline. I filled it up at the where the speed sensor would be and opened up the fill plug until extra came out. I noticed a little bit of oil a couple days later on the ground. Looking at everything It looks like it is coming out of the speed sensor and dripping down onto the ground. Looking at the the plug where the speed sensor would be there is not any damage to the gasket and I can see the oil on the rim of where the sensor plug is. I was thinking that it was just overfilled and I should drain after a long drive when the fluid has heated up. I did open up the fill hole recently and a little bit of fluid came out but the fluid was not very hot.

Thanks in advance for any advice. Just wanted to see if other people had this problem - oh yea I searched. ha.

if you forgot to open the fill plug, and filled until it was overflowing from the speed sensor plug, then you overfilled it and thats why its leaking.

Sorry if my first post was misleading. I filled it up from the speed sensor plug and opened the fill plug to make sure I would not overfill it but I still have a small amount of oil coming from the speed sensor plug.

if it isnt that bad, then i would clean it up real nice and wait to see if it comes back. gear oil sucks like that. if it does come back, then maybe a VERY light coat of silicone like the grey stuff. cleaning the mating surfaces may do the trick all by itself.

Replace the o-ring on the speed sensor plug.

I have the exact same problem but I know that it is an aged seal (Hard and pretty much flat) Is there a particular seal that we are looking for, OEM or otherwise?

Anyone have any know how on this?

The seal/gasket is metal iirc and you should replace them to keep them from leaking.

I was referring to the rubber bit though, it would be a shame if the whole thing had to be replaced

I just changed mine the other day using the fill/drain holes.What are the benefits of filling through the speed sensor hole?

Change the o-ring out. You might have damaged it. I filled thru the fill plug so I wouldn't overfill.

@sh4branze I would assume because its a bit easier instead of going from the side :huh:

It's a much faster operation if going from the top speed sensor plug. You don't need any silly pumps and warmed oil to get the oil in like you do the "normal" way, you can just let gravity do the work.

Check to make sure that the speed sensor cap is properly seated. When I did mine I didn't get it in right and it leaked. It's really hard to tell from above. A mechanic's mirror helps. You can get a replacement O-ring at any auto parts or hardware store.
