Motor clicking/Valve adjustment?

Ok so my motor is starting to make a strange noise. It's like a faint tapping, not a very pronounced noise like valve tap though. It's coming from the back-right of the motor (passenger side towards firewall). It just sounds kind of rough... Another thing is sometimes when I start it up, it makes a screeching noise...like the starter turned over for too long or something.

A frind of mine asked if I had ever adjusted the valves..... :?: I don't even know how to do that first of all. Is it needed on these motors?

Suggestions or thoughts guys? I just don't need a blown motor here.

Sounds like the belt tensioner is seized.

How do I check that? It's pretty tight in there....not sure which one would be the tensioner. I'm assuming I am just sticking my head back there and looking for a seized pulley?

Look for the little shock absorber looking thing on the front of the motor. The belt tensioner pulley is on the other side of the plate that the little shock absorber moves. You will need to release the tension on the belt to check the pulley. You can do this by putting a large c-clamp on the little shock and compressing it with the clamp. Or you can place a socket wrench on the front of the tensioner plate and push it to release belt tension. Once you have the belt tension off the idler pulley go ahead and spin it to check for smoothness and wobble, replace it if there is any.

Ok this clicking thing is getting to me, I'm all paranoid my motor is gonna blow up or aliens are gonna spew out.

I dont have a c-clamp so thats out. I found one bolt thats behind the shock looking thingy, It bolts through the plate to the block. Should I loosen that?

I have a bad feeling I am gonna F* this up and my belt wont be right haha.

worst case senario is you have to replace the tensioner and belt.i bet it is a pita to replace that belt though with the lack of space in there.
