I just wanted to post a review of my wonderful experience with turbokits.com, i couldnt be happier with the support and customer service they offer with the product, Jesse and Matt especially were there to answer any questions i had and were a pleasure to work with!
If your mechanically inclined the install is pretty easy! I did it on jack stands in my apartment complex!

Just to clarify this is the kit i got from them: http://www.turbokits.com/Toyota/MR2_Spyder/Turbo_Kits/

Had it tuned in Long Beach by the man himself Shawn Church : http://churchautotesting.com/

here are my numbers on the dyno tuesday 7/28/15

at 8lbs of boost, i left at 228hp and 198 trq

The power feels amazing, i would definitely suggest this kit to other members who are in search of more power, i weighed my options for about 3-4 months before deciding on this option from Turbokits.com, I couldnt be more satisfied
I told Mr. Chruch i would be happy around 200hp because i didnt know what to expect from the kit and wanted to be somewhat "conservative" and reliable tune but he told me the Tune was guaranteed as long as i own the car, engine feels so strong, im on stock everything, internals, fuel system(besides 550cc injectors), knock barely moves, IAT, oil pressure and engine temps all great!

Man i need to repaint my bumper and install my 03 headlights now!

Congrat! Gotta check out your car next time we meet :)

Be advised Church's dyno reads high. Way high. Any other dyno will tell you that you are making about 210-215 whp. Still, it must be nice to be over the 200 whp mark. I thought my spyder felt pretty fast with only 179 at the wheels, in the moments before it gave up on life. I'm jelly!

#4 ·
those are great numbers for a bone stock 1zz... even if the dyno is on the higher side, you are still over 200 at the wheels, the car must feel great...

i'm assuming with the 550cc injectors, you did the Upgrade 1 also with the PFC ECU?

i wonder what kind of numbers the turbokits unit would make safely on a stock 2zz??? 250 whp maybe?

#9 ·
Very cool and congratulations!

Keep a VERY close eye on your oil level - 1ZZs have issues there and turbos often make it worse. You may want to get an IAT gauge and watch your temps right before the TB in the summer months as well. Probably not a big deal if you do just a row through the gears now and again, but if you are going on long canyon runs and whatnot you will def. be wanting to monitor it. If you see them starting to spike get out of the throttle and take it easy and let things cool down. And of course keep a close eye on the fluid level in that water bottle.

Happy boosting!

Yes, the Church dyno reads slightly high but part of that is because it's mounted to the hubs. He also has a weird calibration. He calls it adjusted for sea level. Maybe reads 8-10% higher. On NA 2zz it's like 190 vs 175-190 on a dynojet

If you are not running an intercooler then keep an eye on the knock.

#23 · (Edited)
hubs? wtf? That's a dyno for crank hp, not to the WHEELS. I've seen these before. That's why it reads so high. It's actually not reading high at all, it's just reading power to the crank and not to the wheels.

10-15% drive train loss is what you usually calculate in for whp to crank hp conversions so all that sounds right. AWD loses a lot more power through the drivetrain, something like 20-25%. Measured right at the hubs, maybe you gain back 5% drive train loss since it goes through the trans at least, so 8-10% sounds about right I suppose.

So this car's making around 190-200whp.

Thanks everyone for the interest and input!
ok ill just try and answer everyone at once if i can:

MR-S jeff - i cant wait until the next MR2uesday or something, all the people ive met so far out here have been very cool owners!

SDSU - if your car is street legal we are gonna have to get you out to one of the meets soon 2! even if his dyno reads high im totally satisfied with the power, i was only shooting for 200+ so my permagrin got alot bigger!

Kamlung - the power does feel great, it constantly pulls, 5th gear now has enough torque to pull like all the other gears, ive had the PFC thanks to Duska on here since i did my SMT to manual conversion to get around the immobilizer issue, he went to an AEM ECU i think so he sold it to me hella cheap imo! Im sure u could probably hit 250+ on the 2zz with this kit safely....but im no "expert"

Galo - Send me those darn floor mats back to riverside like they belong! plz :) lol j/k but the wing is going back on it think, i still have it, ill probably do more traditional mounting points this time or cut out slots in the engine lid and mount the wind to the frame, idk jsut yet
that was one of the most memorable meets ive been 2! Good times!

Haloruler64 - its worth the money man save up, im very happy with my investment

Celicajonz - come out to a meet and see the car sometime, id like to see your spyder 2! Cant beat black with a Hardtop...trade you my team moon dual exhaust for it lol :p

Griffin - Wow thanks for the interest, thanks for the tips, im a big watcher of my oil levels and i also monitor IAT's and knock closely on the PFC, engine temps have been good so far but havent done a canyon run just yet, i also mounted my aem indicator light in the perfect spot but im to OCD to not look in the engine bay all the time and peek at the levels of my coolant, oil, and methanol.

maroon5five - i waited until i had so much comfort with the stock power(7 years).......but to each their own, the wing is the only 54 inch wing i could find on the market and i got it from cncrancingsports.com or something i could go through my old emails and find them if you need me 2.

Scotched - thanks man, come on out i try to make as many meets as i can with my work schedule ....i work every weekend :(

nocoolname - we were all much younger then, i cant imagine how Austin looks all Amish now! Thanks for appreciating my journey, it really has come along way from the stock SMT, its been alot of fun, i miss you guys on that side of the country, one day a national meet will happen im sure of it....everyone should go!

silversprint - thanks man, i watch knock religiously even when i was NA, gotta get you out to a meet 2, ive been following alot of you cali guys for a while, even when in missouri so it be great to meet some of you "old timers" on the board!

Turbokits.com - Thanks again for everything, i only post when im at work waiting to sell a car, trust me ill need tires in a couple weeks :p

oochulshin- thanks for the support man, it definitely was the dream for me 2, glad i finally did it

Thanks again for all the interest and input

cheers

Is my car street legal, hmmmm.

Cat converter = no.
DOT seat belt = no.
Air bags = No, no.
Front splitter 1.5 inches off ground and 6 inches forward of bumper = check
Strait pipe after 4-1 PPE exhaust = check
Registration = no.
Insurance = no.
Blinkers = no
wipers = no
interior = no

All things considered, I don't think my Spyder is street legal. :biggrin-new:

But, wait, hold on...
engine = no

Awwww shucks. :miserable:

so im guessing you will have no problems driving it to the next meet :p

ive been on a PFC since my manual conversion, what i did was borrow a Toyota ECU from arana in orange county and proceed to address each issue i had to pass smog legally, 2 oxygen sensors and a spark plug anti-fouler trick and i passed smog for $55 dollars, i left the smog shop and went straight to the DMV got my california liscense plates, from there my car was dis-assembled for turbo install the 2-3 hours later, i think i even put the turbo manifold on the same day, so i should be good for 2 years unless i get selected to pass smog next year.....so in 2 years ill go back stock to pass smog again then re-install the turbo again....well thats the plan atleast right now!

hope that helps you some!

ncn, you could have been there...and leave him alone, he has feelings, you know :biggrin-new:

rb, sorry, the mats look just fine where they are :biggrin-new: I'm not a fan of the BFW's, but your Spyder did look very good with it! Yes, it was a good time, but it's much better now with the simple eat-drive out, eat-drive back, eat set-up. I'm glad you enjoyed it, I appreciated all those who participated then and participate now.

Anyway, good luck out there!

I have no complaints. I remember in the 80s and 90s before smog when you could barely breath the air here.

Southern California is the center of the import car scene in the US. If you love cars there no other place you would rather be. There are probably more spyders here than the rest of the country combined.

#30 ·
Mistaken cause and effect. Where did that smog come from? You seem to be saying that at least a significant portion of it came from automobiles. But, what about industry? I recall the EPA stating that cars only cause 1/3 of visible smog.

I don't remember LA in the 90's, but I've seen pictures. It was bad. I'm glad things changed, but I'm not sure that change is the result of CARB and catalytic converters. I suspect changes at the industry level are the primary reason. Either way, CARB is out of control now, and has reached far beyond its reason for existence the moment it began measuring anything other than the actual emissions of a vehicle.

Yea as long as i stay reliable and healthy im ok with the numbers debate, the butt dyno is where the smile happens not when its hooked up to the dyno, im still happy i took it to church, it was highly recommended and i was even happier that he knew as much or more about my car than me!

#33 ·
I believe in the theory behind CARB, but it shouldn't matter what you have on your car as long as the polution numbers and sound are within acceptable limits. If the emission numbers are good and the sound is not too loud, who cares if the company waited 2 years and spent thousands of dollars to get a sticker - the pollution result is the same - and people are using non CARB aftermarket parts anyway.

Ross, CONGRATULATIONS!

You are now where we were on our first trip to the Dragon oh so many years ago. Remember when we went for a ride just to see what a turbo might do? So how does the blowoff valve sound? Is it F-in' awesome or what?:alien:

#40 · (Edited)
The blow off valve from Forge is great, its not your traditional vvrrrmmmppsshhh sound and that makes me like it even more, of course everyone loves the HKS but ill stick with the forge one for a long while before looking for alternate sounds to play with in the future.

I thought about blowing your phone up when i got done, i knew you would understand my excitement, you've defiantly influenced me more than any other member and always pointed me in the right direction, i cant tell you how much i appreciate your help along the way, its been priceless!

How could i forget the SADAS X meet, the start of my spyder education!

THANK YOU

Ross, welcome to the club. It is truly amazing the difference in the car when it is boosted. Hope you are enjoying Cali.

I did a thread on my turbo 2zz build starting with a used TK.com 1zz kit. I did ATW intercooling and kept the meth/water injection. Measuring IATs after the intercooler and before meth injection I am typically only a couple of degrees above ambient temps. I still have some heat shields to build between the intercooler and exhaust, but in reality I have no issues without them even in the upper 90s this summer.

Keeping in mind that it's a "street" build and in cool, moist Washington, my intercooler (A/A) is in the engine compartment also, but so far I haven't seen any differences in temperature via my temp guage, I know that's an inexact measurement, but I don't think I need more. If the temperature is 60ÂşF and the humidity 55% it is noticeably peppier than when it's 100ÂşF and 35% humidity, but other than that no apparent differences. One of the reasons I went there was to get it higher up, I didn't want it hanging down under the car. Another consideration was that Saab and Volvo have theirs sitting right on top of the engine in many cases and that seems to not be a problem.
