Sluggishness in 3rd

My 2003 SMT seems to be like it's winding up over 4k RPM's in 2nd and 3rd, in 3rd it's kinda worse like it's waiting for something winds up and then goes all of a sudden. I've been driving like a granny for a bit and now it kinda surges when I come to a stop it likes to go a couple extra feet after I brake completely.

Changed the motor oil today, checked the air filter and it was nasty so changed that and cleaned my MAF sensor (it was really nasty) hoping that would give me back the power I seemed to have lost. The car is running smoother and quicker now seems like 2nd gear is cool all the way through any RPM's but when I get to 3rd and step on it a bit it's winding up kinda feeling is there and then goes after a second or two.

Was reading quite a bit in this section today, could this be a APS sensor problem? or a toasted clutch problem? car has 93k

Thanks guys!

Alex

The only way to say it's a worn out clutch is to rule out the possibility that the SMT isn't erroneously slipping the clutch. The only way to rule that out is to use a small video camera to take video of the clutch actuator in action, or have the clutch inspected...in which case you should just replace it since you've gone through the trouble of having the transmission pulled.

I believe there are SMT error codes for excessive clutch slip. It would be good to pull those codes. You can pick up a device that would read the SMT codes (and do other fun "advanced" things) on Amazon. The software that ships with it isn't authorized, so you can use your conscience to decide to use it or pay Toyota something like $400 for it. You can also get more above board code readers that will also read the codes, but not do the advanced SMT functions.

One more note, the car is really slow throughout all gears and is burning oil like a mad man. Changed the oil at 2,500 two days ago and it was about 98% gone. I'm getting passed at every light I stop at by every make and model car lol.

Follow up on this post it was my clutch, every part of the original clutch was toasted. Oil consumption was due to 4 oil leaks and not the pre-cats thank god. The car was loosing oil not burning it up. The video I posted above is a SMT toasted clutch, symptoms: Power loss, when pushing the gas hard the Rpm's would go up then drop back down like it was winding up then catch and accelerate slowly in 2nd & 3rd gear mainly, dash beeping came on 3 random times then went off and no dash light of any sort.

Replaced with Exedy stage 1 kit, oem flywheel bolts, oem smt clutch bearing, fidanza flywheel and also had the trans fluid replaced with redline mt-90, replaced the pump fluid again with the remains I had left from last year and Corky's BP as the finishing touch.
