Smt Shifting Into Reverse

Hey all! I was just wondering if this is normal? In the mornings when i get into the car i usually wait for the pump to turn off before starting the engine but this morning, I got into the car and didn't wait for the pump to go off and started the car up. I was in a hurry so I put the car in Reverse and usually hear the beeping sound telling me that it's engaged. I didn't hear the beeping and had to put it back into Neutral than back in Reverse again. Is this a sign that my SMT is slipping? Should i be concerned? I've read a lot of forums about the SMT giving trouble. My spyder has only 23,000 miles on it and i haven't driven it hard at all. This has happened a couple of times before. Your responses are greatly apprciated!! mahalo

First of all, what year is your Spyder? The SMT ECU (computer) was upgraded to fix a lot of problems some time in the 2002 or 2003 model year.

But it might not be your SMT ECU. You say this is the first time it happened and you were in a hurry? Here's a theory. The SMT will not go into reverse unless engine rpm is below a certain level. This is for safety reasons and to prevent tranny damage. Mine won't go into gear until 1,400 rpm or lower. That's normal. The weather has changed and this may cause your just-started engine to rev a little higher and a little longer. Maybe today you threw it into reverse before the SMT was happy with the rpm?

Happen to me almost every day buddy. Don't worry about it. Just put into neutral and wait a couple of sec and R again.

Hmm. I'm beginning to wonder if I am flat wrong. I agree that the SMT pump takes a moment ot build up the required pressure. But is rpm not a factor also? If the pump has done it's job can you throw the SMT into reverse at high rpm?

I thought i was in for a big surprise whenever that was happening. I just have to take it easy in the mornings. SPYDERCHAT ROCKS!! HAHA[/b]
you got to really come to a complete stop before engaging to reverse gear.. if not in time to come.. your HPU will be the one suffering..

crazy enough, this only started happening to me since i got the TCM replaced. now i have to sit there and wait a bit for the pump to finish. although there are some times that i get lucky and the reverse engages without waiting for the pump to finish. but i guess all of this is normal.

My pump takes about 15 seconds to go off........it is kinda irritating to just wait there til it does it's thing and then start the car up and then wait again for it to warm up. I just have to remember that i need to get ready in the mornings a little earlier and give me 10 minutes extra just to get out of my driveway.

You are waiting longer than I do for my SMT. I open door, sit, close door, start engine, put on seat belt, put into gear, drive. Rarely to I have to wait for the car to be ready, and when I do it might be 1-3 seconds.

The pump should start to operate as soon as you open the door, as it's tied into the driver's door light switch button - or at least mine is anyway. If your interior light does not go on when you open the door, the pump won't start either, which means that it has to wait for you to turn the ignition on before starting to pump.

Good observation. Maybe he has a door light switch problem.
