Hey all, finally got my Turbo Kits dot com setup installed on my Spyder. Running their kit with 8lbs of boost we achieved 250.4hp and 217ftlbs torque. The car has been completely transformed and is so much fun to drive now.

Went with Power FC with Datalogit
(bit of a pain in the ass to link up to)
AEM’s Methanol Injection
First pull was 242 @ only 12/13 degrees advance at WOT so very conservative and safe. We’ll see how long my c60 lasts lol!

cheers!

Yeah for sure. I think I’m probably teetering on the very max one can run reliably for a street setup. I may rig up some engine bay fans to keep the heat soak down, coolant temps are good but after driving in the 90 degree weather round town so far it’s loosing a little drivability it has when cooler or first start up. AFR’s are pretty high in the 16’s at lights, which isn’t too crazy but I may have my tuner through in some more fuel to bring them down for the summer months. Once underway they go back to 14’s under light load so I’m not too worried about it.

Other than the actual install I can’t take any credit for those numbers lol. It’s a turbokits.com setup with a garret 28 knockoff ball bearing deal, very nice unit I must say. water/meth injected so no inter cooler. Those numbers were reached at 6800rpm and with ignition retarded to 14 degrees. My tuner said that he made a conservative decision to lower from the supplied base map by 5 degrees. He said that the base map was pretty aggressive. My goal was to see 230hp and 190 to 200 on torque. He blew through that on the first pull and I asked him to go up one more degree from that and that’s when we got 250. I called it good because it is certainly at the threshold of stock internals ( and I don’t beat on my stuff) so I said we’re good after only 2 power pulls. Needless to say I was very impressed as was he.

regarding the lotus…I really don’t know anything about it other than what my tuner told he that he achieved, obviously it sounds pretty conservative for a supercharged 2zz but other than that I have no addition info for you.

On order now is a oil cooler and I’m gonna fad up 2 mini 6” rad fans to push air up and out of the hood vents to help keep engine bay temps down

As I'm a forced induction Idiot, I have a question that's be gnawing at me for a while.

I know Superchargers work all the time, and I understand Turbo Lag. But what about highway cruising? Does a Turbo provide any boost in cruise mode? I guess what underlies my question is I'm wondering about what if any effect a Turbo set up has on gas mileage (interstate) as I completely understand what happens to the gas mileage when really using the turbo ;)

How much work does a Turbo do if the engine isn't really working hard, even though the RPM's are up?

Anyway, thanks in advance and sorry for the probably stupid question.

When you are cruising down the highway, say at 70 mph, you are only calling on the engine to deliver 10-20 HP to the axles, so the engine still needs to be throttled and you still have intake manifold vacuum. In this case the turbocharger does create a little backpressure which hurts fuel economy a little bit (probably less than 1 %). Modern turbochargers use an electronic wastegate which opens at light load to relieve this backpressure and gain that little bit of fuel economy.

Yea, as much as I've wanted to turbo, other than the cost, what's held me back is that my car, until very recently, HAS been an eco commuter box, have had a daily 70mile each way commute. So while most of us aren't completely mileage crazy with these cars, I kinda have been ;)

But now I work from home ;)

Very nice! Looking to try and blow mine up someday soon too, will keep an eye on your threads.

How does the water methanol system work? Do you have to keep restocking on methanol and change it constantly? One problem with the Spyder is where to put the intercooler and cutting up the rear bumper looks ugly and having it so close to the floor would destroy it on my roads. Also, when you build it how do you drive it to the tuner without it blowing up on you? Finally how much did you spent total? I'm estimating around 5k?

Omg haha that poor rear bumper. Oh well it still looks clean and really cool I can tell you spared no expense. The damn intercooler is such a problem, I saw a guy that had a iny one where the airbox used to be but Im not sure how effective it may be.

Also, I saw a guy on Youtube that replaced the MR2 radiator and man the factory one is as thin as a waffer! I think he got a Toyo or something similar, it was still slim but it was like 3 or 4 times the tickness than the factory one. This and an oil cooler are really good ideas.

Oh and if you remove the rain pan make sure you got the plastic cover over your engine valve cover because water could get into the spark plugs.

Good luck! :)
