Has anyone has a tow hitch made and pulled a trailer with their Mr2? Is it possible? I've seen a Mazda Miata do it, surely an Mr2 can.

There's at least one member who tows a very small trailer on occasion--IIRC, it's one of those car top carriers, and he put an axle and wheels on it, and only uses it for road trips with the spouse.

Sure, it could probably be done, but it's going to put a significant amount of stress on your drivetrain. Trucks with towing packages have heavier duty batteries, radiators, and transmission coolers. They're tested to make sure the brakes can withstand the extra strain.

The car's not made to tow anything. Doesn't mean you can't do it, but it does mean you're placing stresses on the car for which it was not designed.

I really wouldn't recommend such a stunt. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Didn't Dave Hawkins do this also?[/b]
Like was mentioned he sold the kit.

A good number of people have done this. LT is another one who comes to mind IIRC.

It will be a custom job now but it is possible.

I had no problem. And the car has suffered no damage to the drive train. But there are limitations. 1. no more than 50 to 60 pounds toung weight. 2. trailer weight no more than 350 pounds total. 3 balance weight over trailer axles. 4. always ease up to speed and give plenty of room/time for deceleration. The link to the trailer I built is here. http://spyderchat.com/forums/index.php?sho...l=cargo+trailer

For the hitch you will have to search for someone selling theirs.

Good luck

I know Dave / TwoRUs is not selling the hitch anymore, but does anyone know what the thread size is for the inserts? I saw on another thread someone made their own using 2 inserts with eye rings on the end that they weld to. I'd like to make a set up my car.

What is the thread size and pitch on the inserts?

so what do you want to tow? I think for bringing race tires to and from an event it would be fine.

for installing a nifty hitch bike rack: Perfect

for towing your house hold possessions to an new domicile Nope

tell us what you want to do.[/b]
Yeah, should have clarified. Just a small 4x4 trailer for taking race tires etc to the track - light stuff. TwosRUs isn't selling the kit anymore so I was looking to find out where to get the inserts or what the thread size and pitch was to make some up. Thanks!

You can use 2 stock "Tow hooks".

Does anyone know where you can pick up extra tow hooks? I have one in the car, just need one more. It looks like they are hard to come by. Are there aftermarket versions available?

If you are interested in building the TwosRUS hitch I have some pins that I can sell.
They are made from stainless steel, and are quite stout.

Guy at an autocross i can't remember his name but he had one, put his spare tires on it, no more than a small flat surface over 2 wheels but it held his track tires and some equipment very well. I mean the car certainly has the grunt and due to its light weight its still not that much stress on the engine, and those towing points should be strong enough to hold the weight of the car so why anyone thinks it would be a bad idea is beyond me. I say go for it just keep it light.
